Patch Tuesday is starting to roll out. I see 98 new patches in the Microsoft Catalog. (Note that four older patches also match a search on “2020-04”.)

Me predict some line of business impact with these VBA known issues:

Some types of Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) references might be affected by this update. For more information, see FAQ for VBA solutions affected by April 2020 Office security updates.

Any chance the patches were released, knowing full well that they would trigger the error message?

The Acknowledgement appeared very quickly. Perhaps, as @b has said, it’s a feature not a bug…

When that font exploit was announced we were assured that it wasn’t significant for Windows 10 because of sandboxing, and now we get a sandbox escape CVE-2020-0981. Nice going Microsoft. At least it got patched I guess.

Also confirming successful installation of April updates on five machines. My most sincere thanks to the author and the development / testing team.

For those still in Win 7, are you installing the MSRT monthly?

Is it still safe to install monthly?

      Thanks!

      Win 10 Home 22H2

      • #2241761

Some of us here still install MSRT, some of us don’t. Personally I have hidden it on my Windows 7 machines since it caused a problem some months ago, it doesn’t add anything to a system that is protected by appropriate antivirus/malware software. One of the machines is now upgraded to Windows 10 so I don’t have the choice!

In any event, we’re on DefCon 2 which means no part of the April updates should be installed yet.

For some reason, neither the Windows Update Show/Hide nor the Windows Update MiniTool can find those updates. It’s as if those updates never released.

I am still running Win 10 1909 in a test mode.  I reboot Win 7 into 10 about once a week to install software and run tests.  Windows auto-installed KB4549951 on Win10 Pro 1909, no problems yet.  I did not do much after the install and reboot except to check for other updates and run a backup.  I expected to see KB4553252, the Servicing Stack Update, but I did not. Why?

The only strange thing happened during the reboot.  Before the reboot, Windows told me not to power-off , as it was post-processing the updates.  Then it rebooted, and it got stuck in the “Restarting…” state with the five-dot circular “icon”.  After 60 minutes of waiting, I hit the reset button, and the machine booted fine, did more post-install, and then provided me with the login screen.

      • #2253612

I expected to see KB4553252, the Servicing Stack Update, but I did not. Why?

The Servicing Stack is bundled with the CU in Windows Update in Win10, but does not show in the list of updates to install.
It will also not show in the Update History, and sometimes the CU shows installed twice.
However, it you look at the Installed Updates, you will find both the CU and the SSU listed only once.

    • #2253836

I was under the impression (from reading the AskWoody posts) that the SSU had to be installed by itself; it would not appear if there were other updates whose installation was pending.  I wondered why this was necessary, as, from my Windows 7 experience, the SSU update did not require a reboot; MS could have had logic to install any SSU update first when there were a number of pending updates.

      • #2254086

Win10 is not like Win7. You don’t have the control of Windows Update in Win10. The SSU gets installed first by WINDOWS UPDATE, even it doesn’t list it in the patches to be installed.
Forget about YOU here, MS is in control now. 🙂 🙂

        • #2254710

When the SSU gets installed first, would it be listed in the Windows Update log?  I did not see it (KB4553252) in the Windows Update log.

And another related question – Is there a way to invoke the get-WindowsUpdateLog cmdlet outside of Power Shell?

          • #2254737
            • In Win10, the SSU does not show up in Windows Update pending install.
            • Sometimes, the CU appears twice in WU and may appear to install twice in the Update History. I suspect this may(?) be the SSU presenting itself as the CU.
            • The SSU gets listed in Installed Updates (only once) along with the CU (only once).

I have not looked in the Windows Update log.

Is there a way to invoke the get-WindowsUpdateLog cmdlet outside of Power Shell?

      No, it’s a PowerShell command.
You can view the event log in other ways, Windows Event Viewer or Nirsoft FullEventLogView.

      cheers, Paul

    • #2255877

About the SSU KB4553252 – Should I ignore it and assume that MS will deliver it when MS thinks I should install it?  Or should I go to the MS catalog, download it, and install it?  Thanks.

      • #2255882

I don’t believe you will find KB4553252 listed in the Catalog.

The March Servicing Stack for 1903/1909 is KB4541338. If you have installed the March updates, check your installed updates for that patch.

The April Servicing Stack for 1903/1909 is KB4552152. If you have installed the April updates, check your installed updates for that patch.

In Win10, the Servicing Stack is bundled with the CU in Windows Update.

Windows 10 1909 Pro (home PC): My 15 day deferral expired yesterday. The April CU installed without issue and there have been no problems noted.

I have a Windows 10 1909 Enterprise PC I’m using to telework. I upgraded this machine from 1809 to 1909 on Monday and it got April’s updates as part of the upgrade process. No issues noted here. Prior to the 1809 to 1909 activities, I had done all of the .NET and Office 2016 updates for April without issue.

Paul, thanks.  I was able to use the Nirs0ft tool to get a .csv file, and I wrote an awk script to extract the data I needed.
