Excellent advice, Susan. And thanks for the tip about acpi.sys getting mangled.

This is an excellent post and the link to Microsoft is very helpful. However, Microsoft omitted something very important. Once your computer boots successfully, you now have a computer without the January security updates. You can’t re-install them because they will make your computer unbootable. My question: How then do I install the January security updates?

It’s plenty easier to back up the files and not worry about the OS, because let’s be honest, it takes almost no time to install Win10. But yea, as long as you’ve got a file somewhere with your keys in it you should be fine. I personally use Backblaze for the idea of unlimited backup size for a fixed cost (as I’ve got quite a few terabytes of videos), but I understand why managing your own local backup would be appealing to others.

A quick command line for extracting your programs to a file in C:\Migration\programslist.txt

      wmic product get Description,InstallLocation,InstallSource,Version /format:TABLE >> “C:\Migration\programslist.txt”

I went to the link.  I see steps for W10 but clicking on the W8.1/7 “Resolution Steps” link it only takes you to

      https://support.microsoft.com/en-us

      with no further details.

      What am I missing?

HiFlyer, this worked for me on two AMD computers (32 bit and 64 bit) Windows 7 Home premium.

I installed patch KB4073578 for AMD computers only.

      https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4073578

I installed this before I installed the Security only update that might cause a problem, KB4056897.

If you run Windows 8.1, you’ll have to search for the AMD fix. I did not write it down in my notes.

      Got coffee?

If you install KB4073578, you do not need KB4056897.

I routinely use ACRONIS to make a full image backup of each of my computers weekly (all Windows 7 SP1).  Once before, when an HP Driver Update totally hosed Windows, I wiped the hard disk and recovered the entire image with no problems.  This seems to me the simplest solution in my case.  Can I assume that this would covered the situation you described, since I assume that driver would be part of the backup?

If you are using Acronis to do a full image backup of the HDD, it includes everything that is installed on the Windows partition.

I have used Acronis for years. I always make my images and do my restores from the boot disk.
