For me this  is a huge fail.  For one you have a digital signage that clearly isn’t managed.  Updates and Feature releases should not “pop” on interne

Didn’t they paid Microsoft’s AI enough to manage their updates ? /s

This is an example of using a high-tech solution where it isn’t needed. Do the tenants change there that often? Even if it displays some kind of advertising or other frequently changing information as well, that could still be placed separately on a monitor.

Or try using an ATM while Windows notification bubbles block portions of the screen text…

Surely this is a valid usage case for LTSC?

      • #1801064

Long Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) is what MS is calling it now but Google still has more hits for LTSB and  maybe MS will have to have a DS(Digital Signage) mode in all of its OS versions where that sort of thing does not occur. But this occurs more often than not with all that signage made temporarily useless at the big shopping malls that have more than their share  of this kind of issue than the others.

Wasn’t all that edge computing oriented software/OS to cloud services managed design ethos supposed to prevent this sort of thing from occurring as often in windows 10. That’s going to be annoying when wanting to find the location of the nearest restroom with too little time available on some interactive information kiosk that’s been put out of commission temporarily at a most inopportune time !

Oh these are everywhere, running everything from Windows XP to Windows 7. Most of the ones I have seen with warnings/popups (Win Update tray notifications, Java update warnings, etc.) aren’t even on anything close to Windows 10 yet. But yes, most of them use a full Windows edition.

I used to take pictures of them when I came across them but I’ve given up now, it just happens too frequently to be funny any more.

No matter where you go, there you are.

These do indeed happen quite often.  Signage companies are usually the ones that insist on Microsoft running their products; either because their suite doesn’t run on anything else or because that’s all they understand.  If you’re not using a service provider then you can get away with running your own thing.  At least with Windows XP/7/8 a competent person could turn off auto-updates and popups for signage.  Not so with Win10.

Yes you could do this on something else like an Arduino, but you’d have to build it yourself.  I expect there’s projects for it, but that’s still a bit more hands-on than paying someone else to manage it for you.

There is a IoT (Internet of Things) version of Windows 10 that is the replacement for Windows Embedded. I would think it has these kind of pop-ups disabled, but I’m not personally familiar with it.

Black Box (to name one off the top of my head) and several other vendors have off the shelf products for digital signage that don’t use Windows.

The problem here is the lack of understanding what to use in certain applications, and keeping things simple. Understanding that the hardware and software lifecycle is different in certain environments from a typical desktop, laptop, tablet, or cellphone. These things are meant to just work, and rarely get touched after being deployed.

I’ve actually seen signage products built on top of some version of Android, as well.

That’s at least somewhat better suited for the purpose.

My heart dropped when I saw this DOS error in an elevator on the ninth floor…

Small mercies, at least the elevator still had phyical buttons to press 😉

      • #1834275

It may not be a DOS error, but a BIOS/EFI error. Anyway it very likely only displays ads and has no connection to the operation of the elevator at all.

Sorry Susan, I’m not sure where the best place is to contact you to ask you this question.

On the March Master Patch List you said “I will be doing a special newsletter article on SHA patches – stay tuned. I’ll be discussing KB4474419 at that time as well.”

Can you please provide a link to that article? Thank you!
