Wait a sec: that would mean Microsoft considers it business ready now (seen the Semi Annual setting)???

        greetings,

        Ron.

Apologies, I should have said semi-annual targeted.

The offering still feels awkward and less than ideal. I think it would be better if there was some way to pick a date on the calendar not have the pc suddenly pop up a “hey I want to reboot, is this a good time?”.

That’s what “Schedule the restart” in your screenshot is for; pick any day and time within the next week:

I mean I get asked ahead of time, rather than a focus pulling notification.  Also I don’t want the final “we’re getting it ready”.. .no just do it.

I compare this to how I do it at the office where I know the exact date of the event, not sitting here “gee am I getting it?”

And lost Bluetooth this time, but didn’t lose the TV connection.

You were asked ahead of time, and you could have selected an exact date/time.

          • #330508

No I wasn’t.  I was remoting into another PC, and all of a sudden I got a screen stealing overlay that asked if I wanted to do it now or later.  My point is in my office I set a date in the future of when this event will occur.  I don’t pop up randomly on a Friday night and say hey, let’s do it.  There is still an awkwardness – a feeling that it’s isn’t well planned for the consumer space.

P.S. in hindsight it was acting sluggish and I rebooted it earlier in the evening.  Nothing gave me a clue that 1809 was downloading in the background and staging the update.

Sheesh… Ahead of time == ask me whether I want to upgrade before downloading and messing with computer and let me schedule it. Not pop up “Wheee, we’ve almost finished upgrading your computer, schedule the restart”.

You know that Microsoft’s new ‘AI’ update system hasn’t been build by Spielberg, so it is not sophisticated enough to send you a notice a week ahead. At least there are options like : notify to download updates in group policy..and schedule update and restart.

type winver.exe on the Run dialog box on your Lenovo laptop to see which version & build of Windows 10 v1809 you get.
it should be at least build 17763.253 or higher (maybe even 17763.316)

      • #330589

17763.316 and immediately needs a .net update KB4483452

          awesome.

I was curious to see which 1809 build would be delivered thru Windows Update and it looks like it’s the more recent bugfixed version and not the older 1809 builds like 17763.107 or the buggy file-deleting 17763.1 version.

I have a old HP Desktop with a AMD Athlon 2 and 5 GB Memory that had been sitting in my closet for over 2 years.

A couple of months ago i set it up in my living room as sort of a media center. It had to upgrade from 1607 to 1803 and it just about choked on that.

I checked yesterday(i did have to hit check for updates) and it  offered me 1809.

It went suprising well took about 2 hours but seems to be running well.

I was asked by a neighbour on Saturday to help with the computer because Windows update went wrong. The version installed was… 1803. Home version. Interesting :).

Luckily, it just needed a reboot. But hey, is PIN setting unavoidable since this version? I removed it, but Windows asked for it on the next reboot…

You should be able to remove the PIN permanently:

But a PIN is better than a password:

Why a PIN is better than a password

That’s exactly what I did, but I was asked to create a PIN on a next reboot without an option to opt out. I use the PIN myself, but that’s an old lady and she doesn’t want to use something new. Since she’s the only user anyway and doesn’t move the laptop from her desk I turned off the need to enter the password in “netplwiz”.
