Something in the premium comments on Thurrott’s newsletter about 2004 limping along caught my eye: “I wish Windows Update would tell you why the 2004

There’s an interesting overview on A Square Dozen:

from a client installation perspective, it is often difficult or even impossible to match up an error message/code with anything published on [the Release Information site] (or any other Microsoft site).

This post is a deep dive into my experience with identifying Hard Blocks and making sense out of generic error messages like the one below. It will also contain some best guesses for how some things work where I may not have a 100% clear understanding.

It sure seems odd to me that newer machines aren’t being offered v 2004. I have three older refurbished Dells: 2 Latitude laptops and an Optiplex desktop. They were all offered the 2004 feature update shortly after it was released. Of course there is nothing really noteworthy about the new version, but I have backup images and so I installed 2004 on both laptops and haven’t had any issues. The upgrade process didn’t take all that long either.

My 3 year old Lenovo just got the 2004 update after saying for quite a while that it wasn’t ready yet. No problems. The camera driver was also updated. Haven’t checked to see if the camera still works.

What has changed in your PC/OS that so pleased Microsoft’s 2004 ?

Nothing that I know of.  If I remember correctly, Susan earlier complained of getting the same MS message (paraphrasing, “The update isn’t quite ready yet.”) on her Lenovo too.  I figure MS fixed a problem it had with Lenovo.  Anyway, it works, or at least doesn’t noticeably break anything.

My 3 years old Lenovo had at first the message : your pc isn’t ready for 2004.
That message has changed to : 2004 isn’t ready for your pc..
The messages just disappeared about 2 week ago and now there is none.

It took over a year for my lenovo e545 to be ready for the first iteration of win10-it seems Lenovo is STILL not keeping current! I have since switched to 2 acer models and am much happier. The lenovo started to overheat and it seems to be the mobo. Piece o crud (self edited for how I REALLY feel)

I use Lenovo laptops for the last ~20 years starting with A31p and XP.
Used that Thinkpad for 10 years without a single problem apart for installing new batteries every 6 years.
Bought a Lenovo E520 with Windows 7 which was used for ~5 years until I accidently spilled water on the laptop which damaged the motherboard.
Now close to 3 years with Lenovo Y530 and Windows 10.

I refrain from installing software on Windows as much as I can (Windows was never and will never properly support installation/uninstall software).
I use portable software as much as I can (90+% of software on my PC).

              In total 0 problems.
