Anyone running a “Sweepstake” on when the first Humungous update comes out?
I would have suggested the first BSOD, but as Donna Sarkar, cryptically, said it was delayed by a higher than average amount of BSOD’s.
I wonder what constitutes a higher than average number of BSOD’s? I would have said one’s plenty enough for me.
If your “hell bent” on getting this latest Version, and it seems like on the Reddit Mega Thread there’s a few itching for its release “like Moth’s to the Flame;” Your better off getting the Win10 .iso not only for install but for recovery purposes. Not using the M$ recommended settings with the Media creation tool gives you flexibility for future use.

They’re pushing this to the public already? This is crazy. Time to fire up the popcorn I guess. As Flounder said in the movie Animal House, “Oh boy, this is gonna be great!”.

I feel like Rudolph in that as much as I’d like to play in the reindeer games, I have too much going on right now. Maybe later this week.

Update: I couldn’t resist when you said they are pushing it to home users already. I have a laptop at work running home edition. I fired it up, ran windows update and sure enough 1803 is now downloading.

1803 via WU is now here – equally surprised, expected next week!

Update & its timing was actually quite okay, I am checking for collateral damage as we speak…

      • #188993

        Damage so far:

        1. AMD Radeon Settings crashing post-update – had to be reinstalled to fix it

        2. HP DeskJet printer driver suddenly gone – had to be reinstalled

        3. Search Index gone (but I had witnessed it earlier sadly, rebuilding as we speak)

        4. I’m guessing File History index gone as well (I had witnessed it earlier sadly), will have to be re-synced which is really a waste of time and resources…

2 users thanked author for this post.
        • #189023

Nice surprise for a change: File History just ran as normal, so its index is not gone this time. Save me some quite considerable amount of my time!

So it’s just Search Index that still needs rebuilding…

          • #189208

Just confirming… you were running Win10 (1703? 1709?) and, without going to the download site, you ran Windows Update, check for updates, and 1803 started installing itself on your machine?

            • #189334

I can confirm that just now I went to update and much to my surprise it said that 1803 was 33% downloaded, unless it’s mighty small it didn’t wait for me to ask and I definitely didn’t OK anything :)…If it gives me any grief I’ll let you know

So far so good with 1803 on my work Dell Precision with i7-7700. I figured it’d be ok given it’s pretty new hardware. Keeping my fingers crossed for other machines…

I think I managed to hide this on Win10 Home:

      1. Run the Show or Hide Troubleshooter (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3183922). Choose to hide updates. The feature update does not appear.

      2. Go to Settings > Update and Security > Windows Update. Click Check for updates. The feature update will appear and start preparation.

      3. Run the Show or Hide Troubleshooter again. This time the feature update is listed. Hide it.
      Hide1803-1

      4. Turn off the network (I turned on Airplane Mode). The feature update continues “Preparing to install.” (I tried rebooting at this point but after the reboot, it just continued “Preparing to install”.) Eventually it changes to “Awaiting download.”
      Hide-1803-2

      5. Turn on the network. Windows starts Checking for updates again. The feature update is no longer listed and does not download.
      Hide-1803-3

Bottom line:  you can’t hide it until it detects that it should install, but after that, hiding it does seem to work. The feature update does not have a KB number but it does have an Update ID: {bd352700-9e34-4bed-9827-280d92737ef9}. It’s currently at Revision 1. If that is updated, you may have to re-hide it.

Also note this in Mary Jo’s ZDNet post:

Q: Is Microsoft estimating how long the rollout of the April 2018 Update might take?

A: “The April 2018 Update will begin rolling out on April 30 in a measured, deliberate way to ensure quality experience for all. It will begin with devices that are ready for the April 2018 Update based on specs to ensure the highest levels of compatibility and rollout to the nearly 700 million devices running Windows 10 over time,” said a spokesperson.

        I’d say about 6 months.

Wellllll. It took 2 hours and 15 minutes to my desktop screen. I manually ran windows update and from that point it took 1 hour and 45 minutes before I was prompted to restart. Then ran for another half hour doing the update that users will see. This is an i7-3517u with 8 gb of ram and an ssd hybrid drive. So it’s not that old. I have quite a few older desktops so if I ever push this to those computers I may need a 3 day weekend. And will I get calls from people asking why their pc is running so slow during that period that Windows Update is doing behind the scenes work?

So to summarize. No blue screen. I guess a successful update as far as Microsoft is concerned. My day is done. I’ll play some more tomorrow.

Just hide 1803 via wushowhide.   I needed to set “advanced options” to “semi-annual channel (targeted)”  & feature deferred to 0 so wushowhide could see the update.   Then set  “advanced options” back to “semi-annual channel” and  & feature deferred to 365. I am at 1709 now.

You were running Win10 (1703? 1709?) and, without going to the download site, you ran Windows Update, check for updates, and 1803 started installing itself on your machine?

    • #189191

Installed on both my systems. No issues noted, but go through all the settings and check what’s changed and disable the Diagnostics and Feedback and Activity History, if you don’t want MS prying any further into your lives !

    • #189221

      Hi Woody,

Yes, I was running Win 10 Home 1709. I went to Windows Update and checked for updates. It found 1803 and installed. I believe that you have to manually check for updates in Windows Update. Perhaps if you leave it alone, it won’t install?

Either way, it took about 60 minutes from start to finish (getting to desktop). So far, it seems ok, but I am not crazy about the Timeline feature.

Did you end up on build 17134.1?

Used Media Creation Tool to create ISO and burned to disk.  Made sure to allow tool to check for updates but ISO was build 17134.1.  Installed from disk and updated OS is build 17134.1.  Manually checking for updates doesn’t download the recent Cumulative Update to take me to 17134.5.  I guess we’ll have to wait until May 8 for .5 (or beyond).

    • #189229

      Hi Woody,

I am at work, but I will check for the build number when I get home later this afternoon and will report back.

    • #189259

So wait… They delayed a month to fix something (17134.5?) then they push an older version via windows update?

What was officially fixed in the delay?

      • #189277

Yes – exactly. I think that they partially shipped an Insider preview build with all the quirks and limitations. Because it has to be April because it’s called April update. Dead giveaway – look at your feedback frequency in Settings-Privacy-Diagnostics & Feedback…… Set to automatic (obviously!), greyed out… and “Windows Insider program manages this option”.

They actually shipped an insider build version (either wholly or in part) to millions of home users. It is beyond belief.

Approved for the test environment in WSUS and I have an eligible victim on the domain running 1709… moah hah hah! I’ll check back in later. Eventually I’m going to re-image that computer and install 1703 and try doing the update also. Most of our W10 machines are still on 1703 because I didn’t like the upgrade from 1703 to 1709.

In a small Windows 7-only environment, the upgrade to Win10 1803 was just offered through WSUS for four Win7 machines. Three are Win7 Enterprise with expired Software Assurance (I’ve seen this before). One is Win7 Pro. Another Win7 Pro machine shows that the upgrade is “not applicable.” I wonder how WSUS determines that a machine is eligible for the (free?) Win10 upgrade.

Any indication that it’s free? In other words, that you’ll end up with a”genuine” copy?

On Windows 7 machines, are you using any software, such as GWX Control Panel, to prevent Windows 10 installation?

I’ve had a handful of windows 7 machines indicating they were eligible for the upgrade to Windows 10 in WSUS. But whenever I tried to push it to one, nothing happened. This was several months or more ago. I never looked into it much but I think we need some sort of Windows 10 key to apply to the windows 7 systems for it to work. Of course I may be completely wrong on the key thing, but I never got a W7 system to upgrade to W10 in wsus.

That said I’d still be curious to see if we can still use a Windows 7 product key to upgrade to Windows 10. I haven’t tried for a couple months but I was always able to upgrade a windows 7 system to windows 10 using the product key sticker on computer.

I’m casually tracking reports of Windows 7 being offered Windows 10 upgrade as I think this method will be the trend for those who choose to stay with Windows 7 to 2020. At some point, current methods for blocking GWX installation will fail as Microsoft will have developed new methods for injecting Windows 10 and the old blocking registry entries will no longer be sufficient.

I fully expect to see more reports such as yours for all Windows 7 versions.

No; in fact, there is a popup that requires me to agree to a license. See the screen shots in this post:  https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/how-to-really-truly-block-the-pushed-upgrade-to-the-next-version-of-windows-10-version-1803/#post-183036. Still confusing–how can an upgrade to a genuine license, offered by Microsoft-supplied WSUS software, not be genuine?

I’d forgotten about that, but yes, all Win7 machines, including those that WSUS is offering to upgrade, include two registry values, created as follows:

      REG ADD HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Gwx /v DisableGwx /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
      REG ADD HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate /v DisableOSUpgrade /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

Well I got my test system fully updated to 1709 in wsus and when completed WSUS reports the system as not eligible for the 1803 update. This doesn’t surprise me because I’ve always seen strange things with Windows 10 systems and WSUS. It seems like some systems take a few days to update their status in WSUS.

My work pc was eligible so what the heck. Might as well dive in. Only way I’m going to find out is to make use of it. I was quite surprised that it still took 1 hour and 15 minutes to complete. I’m running an i5, with 8 gig ‘o ram and a Samsung Evo ssd. I’m guessing the bios update for spectre slowed things down.

The behind the scenes update took exactly 1 hour before prompted to reboot. It was an additional 15 minutes before I got to my desktop. So I’ll be running Windows 10 pro 1803, 17134.1 on a domain. I’ll be sure to report anything I come across.
