When I copy a period and try to paste it immediately to the right of a right paren, Word inserts an extra space between the right paren and the period. Is this a bug or a setting issue?

Could be the old “Smart Cut and Paste” kicking in. Try turning that off or tweaking the settings:

Tools > Options > Edit tab (about 60% of the way down, on the right)

Jefferson is correct. To change this behavior:
      – Select Tools | Options…
      – Activate the Edit tab.
      – Either clear the check box “Smart cut and paste”, …
      – Or leave the check box ticked, but click the Settings…. button next to it, and clear the check box “Adjust sentence and word spacing automatically”.

Thanks Hans and Jefferson. When I unchecked the Smart Cut and Paste option, the problem went away.
