I’m using Windows 10 Pro – 1809 (build 17763.437) and yesterday my “paste” disappeared from the context menu.  I can paste into the command window and notepad with ctrl V, but not in file explorer.  I did a system file scan, checked the clipboard and repaired WordPerfect – all to no avail.

I copied some text (ctrl>C) in a WordPerfect document and did a ctrl>V here, and it copied fine.  Also copied into the same document, but will not paste into file explorer. Ctrl>V doesn’t work, and there is no paste available in the right click context menu.

Can anyone tell me how to add paste back into the context menu?

    Thanks,

    Lorraine

Before trying too many technical solutions, I’d start at the basics, if this was on my machine, like a Restart. Also, try copying a file already in File Explorer, and see if the right click menu offers Paste as an option in File Explorer then.
Also worth trying would be Shift>Right Click, just in case it shows up in there.

To paste into the Command window, you can’t use the right-click menu, because the Command window is DOS-based, not Windows-based. You have to click the tiny icon in the upper left of the window frame, then choose Edit / Paste.

Notepad, on the other hand, IS a Windows-based program. It should allow you to choose Paste from the right-click menu. Is Paste grayed out, or is it missing altogether from the menu?

Oops, I replied to the wrong response.

        Sorry Mr. Jim

        Thanks Mr. Jim;

Well, I just used ctrl>c to copy my greeting above, and pasted it into the command window using ctrl>v. No problem.

It seems I can copy from explorer to explorer, and to the desktop using the context menu and after copying, when I right clink in the destination, paste is there.  So that leads me to believe that the problem is within WordPerfect X8.  When I copy a file name from a WP X8  document using the right click and then right click again: on the desktop; on the same document I copied from, or even right here in the reply box, the paste option is there, and the text is copied.  Ctrl>v also works.

So now it looks like the only thing I can’t do  is copy from WP X8 to file explorer.  I just copied text from a WP document into a blank email (in Thunderbird) and it copied using ctrl>v and by right click as paste was  there in the context menu.

That makes me think the problem is with file explorer???

I’m totally stumped – (I did go through the repair option for WP on the control panel)

Where in File Explorer are you trying to paste?  It has to go into a file or a file in a folder as File Explorer [and the previous Windows Explorer and the previous File Manager on Win3.x] lists Folders and Files, files are created by programs.  To verify copy/paste I’d open Notepad or WordPad [both in Start, W section, Windows Accessories], open a New document and paste into a blank page on either.

The only real thing one can do with copy/paste of text in File Explorer is in rename of a file or a Folder.

Before you wonder "Am I doing things right," ask "Am I doing the right things?"

So now it looks like the only thing I can’t do is copy from WP X8 to file explorer.

Lorraine, could you please clarify just what you are copying from? Are you trying to copy from the contents of an opened .wpd/.doc file? or are you trying to copy a .wpd/.doc file from one folder into your File Explorer?

Copying text contents will not permit you to paste into File Explorer, and you would normally expect the Paste option to be greyed out or not showing. You should not come up with a similar problem if you have copied a file from within a folder, for pasting into another location (using File Explorer).

However, if you are viewing the Quick Access section, rather than navigated to a particular folder, you may encounter problems there.

        Thanks Kirsty.

I had a really bad senior moment there.  I knew you can’t paste text into a FILE folder, you can only put files into File explorer.  It just took me a while (and some input from you) to remember that.

        Thanks to all who replied.

You’re very welcome, Lorraine. It’s so very easily done, but getting a little friendly input to get one back on track can be a big help at times like that 🙂

Yeah it is really frustrating when the answer does not match the question.  I used right-click and selected paste to paste a directory from the clipboard into the command prompt window for years (usually following CD to change to that directory).  I know this used to work.  And now it has changed so that the clipboard contents are dumped directly after the prompt upon a right-click – no longer does a menu come up, but it used to.  Some one above did point out that if you right-click the c:\ icon on the menu bar that paste is included under edit.  So this is an equivalent process that is one step longer to accomplish.  I suppose about all I would have ever used this right-click menu for was to paste and not any of the other functions that used to be there.  So “maybe” microsoft made this more efficient.  Otherwise, to use the right-click on the menu bar for the same context menu, its one step longer.  this is more often the type of improvements we are used to seeing from them.

        That menu is an option.

Right click the title bar of the Command Prompt.
        Select Properties.
        Go to the Options tab.
        Turn off QuickEdit mode.

When I right-click  to copy and paste from an article i am looking at from the internet the box that pops up does not offer the copy or paste anymore. I would appreciate it if anyone can help me with this. I am a long-time computer user but with little technical knowledge so if you have an answer please give details as many steps and as dumbed-down as you can possibly imagine. For example, because I must go to work and am shutting off  my laptop I am writing by hand the address here so I can come back and see if anyone has responded. Would appreciate it very much.

Have you restarted the laptop (not just shutdown followed by power on)?

Which browser do you use where the right-click menu does not include copy?

      • #2354887

We need more info about where you are attempting to copy the data.
Please tell us exactly what you do to copy the data.

        cheers, Paul

I suppose you have highlighted the text you want to copy, first..

Can you upload a screen print of the right-click menu ?

    • #2355008

      Hello Alex5723,

Thanks for responding, much appreciated. I usually highlight in blue with a left-click, then go to the right -click to find copy, and then paste when i get to where i want to put it.

I tried refreshing but that doesn’t seem to work. I can’t upload the boxes without copy and paste so I just wrote is in them down.

The right-click box that I get with Google Chrome lists Back, Forward, Reload, Save As, Print, Cast, Create QR code for this page, Translate to English, View page source. Inspect.

The right-click box from Microsoft Edge lists Back, Forward, Refresh, Save As, Print, Cast media to device, Read Aloud, Translate to English, Add page to collections, Web capture, View page source, Inspect.

I used to get copy and paste and for some reason it changed.

If you can think of anything let me know, and if not, well, thanks for your time either way.

      Steve

It depends on where you right click.
You must right click on the highlighted text to get the copy option.

Take a screenshot with your smartphone…

      Alex, Paul,

      Thanks for your time.

Paul, I think you helped me because when I held the cursor over the highlighted text it sometimes will give me the copy/paste option, I guess I didn’t get that that was the way to go. Just learned cut and paste a couple of years ago. Playing around with it now, depending on what type of text I am looking at it either works or it doesn’t but thanks for getting me back on track.

Alex, although I was able to take a picture with my cellphone, and I do know how to upload it to my laptop, I couldn’t figure out how to get it into this box using the insert icon without an address for the picture, or by any other method.

      Thanks to both of you.

      Steve

Taking a photo on your phone and using that photo to get the help that you need is fine if that works for you, however, a screenshot, or specifically a W10 ‘Snip’ & Sketch to show the Right Click menu on a text selection in web page is designed to do that for you.
You don’t need to copy and paste to use it, you simply select the text, right click to show the right click menu on screen, then press the Windows + Shift + S keys.
The screen will dim and the cursor will change into a crosshair and you can ‘draw’ around the menu, or anything else you want to ‘snip’ to get the capture.
In the bottom right corner, you will then see an opened dialog box with the option to Select here to mark up and share.

Click that option (we are only using the share side of this for your example) and save it (Save as) in a folder of your choice with a suitable name for identification purposes. You could even a create a dedicated folder for ‘Snips’ should you want to.
Now close out ‘Snip & Sketch’, then go to the Askwoody forum and in the reply box, input a short description, then Select File.

Navigate to the location of the image (snip) you want to show, select it, then ‘Open’.
Opt to Insert into content, then Submit.
Job done – your image in your reply. A useful visual aid to show others in a forum.
Click the image below to see a short video of the above. The browser used is Google Chrome.
