    hello Loungers

My co-worker has a 181-page PDF file with a password protected text copy, and edit. The original document that created the PDF is also no longer exists, and now she needs to grab the text and make changes.

Any ideas on how to proceed? Do we need a password cracker?

    Thanks for any ideas

Do we need a password cracker? Good luck, the PDF password function is one of the best if it was made using Adobe.

If you can print it out, you could OCR it for starters.

        [/indent]
Recent OCR apps (well Omnipage Pro at least) can read the PDF file directly. You can then “Save as…” to either another PDF or Word or….

You can look here: Google Search: pdf password recovery. I think you’ll find it is going to cost you a bit of money.

Another idea is a program like Able2Extract and Able2Doc http://www.investintech.com[/url%5D. I’ve used this to make a Word and Excel file of a PDF. It’s not free but I think $40 is cheap enough (especially since you’re working for a company that wants to get at this document. One product does PDF to Word only, others do PDF to whatever. They also have a trial version. I didn’t read far enough in the manual to see if it works on protected PDF files but I have used this myself on Word files (I purchased a copy) and it does an OK job – the output needs some re-formatting to be perfect.

      Hi,

If your workmate needs to modify a few characters (maybe a price in a list) you could try modifying the PDF file itself, which you can do if the company owns a licence of Acrobat full version. The thing is, what to do if the document is protected against changes? Well, one thing I’ve frequently come across… many times people protect documents against changes, but they don’t password-protect them later. So all you have to do is go to the security settings and try to revert them to none. If Acrobat asks for a password, game over. If not, you can edit the document.
