Here’s a strange shopping adventure for ya! I have been a Paint Shop Pro user for as long as I can remember and try as I might with Gimp and others, I can’t break myself away from the familiar old “comfortable shoes” of PSP. However, I have made myself ignore the $100 nags from Corel to “upgrade” to the latest Version, Paint Shop Pro Photo X2. PSP X (10) does all I need in my amateur status.

However while at Amazon.Com placing my order for the soon to be released Windows 7 “picture book” ([post=”790957″]Post 790957[/post]) I happened across a price for PSP Photo X2 of $49 so I jumped at the chance. It arrived yesterday and I have installed it, so far have no complaints and many of the things I do on a regular basis are easily able to be found.

The irony, if you can call it that, is that while registering my new purchase at the Corel site, I saw a couple of specials that appear to be short term. They are advertising discount prices on both X2 and X2 Ultimate.
X2 Ultimate normal price $100, on sale for $60 (huh? see next line!) (Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 – Ultimate)
X2 regular price $80, on sale for $70 !!! (Paint Shop Pro Photo X2)
I don’t know if there’s any typos in there, but here’s a link to the product comparison chart:

I first bought PSP at about version 5, and I still use V11 for most things. I didn’t see the need to buy upgrades more recent than that.

I have a copy of Photoshop CS4, and I am trying to get used to it, but I still go back to PSP to do things I am familiar with in a hurry.

I have PSP X2 Ultimate and upgraded from 10 to X2. I have tried several others but I always come back to PSP. I have been using it since the early DOS days.

Got the weekly bunch of flyers delivered today. Noticed that Bestbuy (in Canada) has Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 (PC version) on sale this week (Sept 4 – 10) for only C$39.99. Is Corel having a fire sale or something??

Likewise, have tried to use other photo progs but always revert to PSPro. Just seems much easier to use. Been using version X2 for a while, X2 Ultimate has extra features such as dealing with more RAW images and extra photo frames I think. I’ve been getting prompts from Corel lately and it seems they are trying to push “Corel Digital Studio 2010” which is a suite of digital media editing stuff including video, I assume to keep up with photoshop elements etc.

Well, it is getting to be that time of the year and Windows 7 will be out next month. So the new versions (Windows 7 compliant) will be out and then Christmas. Looks like to me, even on the local shelves, the retailers are dumping current products to make room for the new versions. Who wants a old version for Christmas?

Since we’re on the subject of PSP Photo X2, as usual I question what an application does behind the scenes to my system. I’m wondering about Corel Photo Downloader and/or Corel File Shell Monitor. Do either or both of these apps need to be running? In my Googling so far, it looks like NOT but I thought I’d throw the question out here. Thanks.

PS Dave: I hope an upgrade or patch for Windows 7 would be a freebie but we’ll see, won’t we?

      Al,
Well, X2 does run well with Windows 7 including on a 64 bit machine and OS. I heard the X3 was in the mill but I do NOT have any inside source to confirm that.

I have the Shell Monitor running, but I find nothing on the Downloader

Thanks for that tip, Dave. Only a month and a half until I get my RTM copy…

Here’s a shot of my WhatInStartup screen and as you can see, I’ve disabled both for the time being to see if there are any bad side effects.

OK, I found them both using MSCONFIG, but the downloader is NOT listed in the task manager.

When, I started using PSP is was owned by ‘Just Another Software Company’ (JASC) which Corel bought in 2004.

The downloader jumps in when a external storage device is plugged in, like a camera flash drive or external drive–offers to pull all the media off and put it on an internal drive. It definitely does not have to be running all the time. Don’t know about the shell.

If one lets Picasa manage the photo database its photo downloader is much perfered because it will keep a database and already know what photos on a flash card have already been copied over, so one doesn’t end up with multiple copies of the same photo if they aren’t wiped off the card each time they’re downloaded.
