Anyone have any relatively painless installs of WinXP?

I did a mostly clean install, not only did WinXP setup install drivers that worked for everything, but Windows Update had newer drivers for three items (including my cheeseball discontinued webcam).

So far every app I’ve installed has worked well. I even have a few old DOS apps that work fine and don’t cripple the system while running (listening to a broadband stream with WMP 7.1 and playing Cyberbox was too cool smile ).

My only real complaint is Windows Messenger. I could not abide it’s rudeness when it tried to start when I check my Hotmail account. Since I couldn’t find a setting to turn this behavior off, I ended up telling Zone Alarm to deny access/server rights. This actually slows using Hotmail down, because WiM is constantly trying to access the Internet. rrrr aflame

Other than WiM, WinXP has been good to me. I’m not the only one, am I?

Pretty typical for a clean install. Run msconfig and enter the startup tab and disable msmsgs, that should quiten ms messenger.

You want testimonials? XP Pro has been a dream on my machine, and it wasn’t even a clean install. It was a painless upgrade from Win2k. The only problem i have had is that, while the install upgraded IE to version 6, it didn’t touch Outlook Express, so i still have OE5.5. I’ve tried all the obvious things and asked everyone I know, even in this forum, and so far no one has a clue how to fix it other than wipe the HD and start over. But I don’t see that OE6 is worth the hassle. Anyone else have any ideas?

[/indent]Now that’s weirder than IE6’s flaky behavior when I ‘upgraded’ to it on the Win2k box. Dealing with a bad upgrade is one thing. But for the installer to fail to upgrade a major accessory….I wonder why that happened? Heh…maybe setup determined OE6 wasn’t compatible with XP. smile

I have been running Windows XP Pro since Beta 1(dual boot with Me), on a Sony Laptop. When the retail version was out, I installed it on the Laptop and has been running great and still dual bootin. Upagraded the wife’s Sony laptop to XP Home (Sony Provided), part of the plan when we bought her machine. Did a clean install on her desktop with XP Pro, and I have just commpleted a clean install on my desktop. My desktop is now a triple boot boot system, Windows 98Fe, 2K and XP Pro.

All are running just like they were designed to, on a peer2peer network and a cable connection. Printer and file sharing set without a problem. At the same time we have been upgrading from Office 2000 Pro to Office 2002 Pro.
