Can somebody tell me how to reset Word back to the default settings please? Some how my margins at the top of my documents have all changed. The margins are 4cm wide and I have to change them manually each time I use word. When I go to print I get this message that it is outside the document which of course it isn’t. Hope someone can help.
Thank you.
Cheers, Di

AskWoody LoungerMarch 15, 2002 at 8:21 pm #576527From the Page Setup dialog, set the margins as you like it. (a little shakespeare for you there.)
Then click the Default button. Answer yes to the question about saving the change to normal.dot. Done.
(I don’t have 2000, so I can’t say where that “Default” button is. In 97 it’s at the bottom left of the Page Setup dialog.

AskWoody LoungerMarch 15, 2002 at 9:31 pm #576536Thanks Kevin. I have no trouble settings margins but I can’t find the default button you mentioned. I can only find the customise which asks to save to normal.dot. As soon as I go back to Word the great wide margins are still there.
Can you describe or post a screen shot of the default button for ’97 please. I see in Word 2000 that I can change the view to ’97.
Cheers, Di

AskWoody LoungerMarch 15, 2002 at 9:55 pm #576541I think it is very possible that my normal.dot is corrupted. Everything else on my system seems to be. I actually tried to delete my normal.dot but was denied and I can’t move it from the windows templates folder either. I have tried to save Normal.dot after changing the margins but of course I can’t remove the existing Normal dot or over write it to save the new one in it’s place.

AskWoody LoungerMarch 15, 2002 at 9:58 pm #576543You can’t delete it with Word open. So exit Word first. If you still can’t delete it, Windows still sees a Word kernel running (even though you don’t). Open the Task Manager — which version of Windows do you have? — and look for winword.exe in the processes list. Click on it then click End Process. Then try deleting normal.dot.

AskWoody LoungerMarch 15, 2002 at 10:29 pm #576552Something here does not compute. How could you change the normal.dot (or any document or template) margins if you could not open Word? You have to start Word to change margins. Confused…
Anyway, make sure you got the right Normal.dot. For reason too detailed to explain here, Word can created Normal in various places. Search your local disk for normal.dot and delete all copies found.

AskWoody LoungerMarch 15, 2002 at 10:59 pm #576561Sorry I didn’t explain it very well. I changed the margins in Normal.dot (incidentally I only have the one Normal.dot) and saved it as Normal.dot.doc in the templates folder. Then closed Word and and deleted Normal.dot renamed the one I saved to Normal.dot then I went back and this is when I couldn’t open up Word and got the winword.exe error. Looks like it is easier to just manually change my margins every time I use Word.
) Thanks for all your help Kevin.

AskWoody LoungerMarch 15, 2002 at 11:17 pm #576564Yes I did this and it goes straight back to those real wide left and right margins. LOL That’s why I said it is probably easier for me to manually change them each time I use Word. I don’t know what I did to stuff them up initially. I thought there must be an easy way to revert back to the default settings. Maybe I should uninstalled and then reinstalled Word?
Cheers, Di
