I have a letter which has page numbering (using the #) in the footer. Numbering starts on page 2 (using “different first page” in Page Setup) and numbering is set to start from 1. There is a requirement for a Section Break (Continuous) on page 2 for formatting reasons.

The problem is that when a third page is added, the page numbering does not increment, so this page also has “page 2” in its footer. The page numbering only seems to start incrementing after page 3, as the next page (page 4) has “page 3”, page 5 has “page 4”, etc.

I have done some testing and the problem is caused by the Section Break (Continuous) on page 2, but I need to have it there.

I would be very grateful for a suggestion on how to fix this small but annoying problem.

Click somewhere in the second section.
      Select Insert | Page Numbers…
      Click Format…
Select the option “Continue from previous section”.
Click OK to close the “Page Number Format” dialog.
Click Close to close the “Page Numbers” dialog (don’t click OK, that would insert a new page number).
