I have inherited an Excel spreadsheet [i.e., I am using Excel xp with Win XP sp3] that has Page 1, Page 2, etc in fairly large font in the background in light grey color when you view it. The Page 1, Page 2 also prints in light grey when you print the worksheet.

My boss wants this removed. I thought that it was a background…but it is not. I know this is probably so simple, but can someone tell me how to remove this? Thanks.

It sounds like the sheet is in Page Break view, you should be able to get rid of the page numbers by selecting View | Normal. But those page numbers shouldn’t print, I have no idea what would cause the page numbers to print.

        Hans,
Thanks for this answer…solved the on screen issue.

So I then examined the printer issue…Someone in the department had turned on a watermark feature on the copier we use to print worksheets….I was always thought a watermark from a printer always printed diagional on the page…but our new coper has the ability to “print” watermark page numbers horizontally across each page in grey scale…

Thanks again for your help…As your answer solved my screen issue and when you stated you didn’t know how Excel would print the page numbers—it caused me to investigate our copier / printer device. This device has only been in the department for a couple of days….Take care.
