Hi, I’m still learning Access but I want to make a webpage with a form that will update the Database, now I want it to work for users who don’t have Access, is this possible? I have played around a little with it and could only get it to work for the one’s that have Access on their computers already.

Patch reliability is unclear, but widespread attacks make patching prudent. Go ahead and patch, but watch out for potential problems. |

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 7, 2001 at 3:41 am #513634This is certainly possible. You could use a data access page constructed in Access. (Look up help and type in Data Access Page – you will get a number of references.
There is a comment on one of these that “users who have a Microsoft Office 2000 license can update data over the Internet or an intranet” This may well be a misprint and should perhaps read “Users who do not have… ”
I think all you need to use the page is IE5 or later.
The place where the page is located is important. It must be accessible to the proposed users and must be able to link to the database. This may cause problems in a corporate environment.
The permissions for the database and record locking will also need to be thought about. If one user has the database opened exclusively the Data Access Page will not be able to do much.
I suggest you try to do it using the help files and come back to the forum if you have specific problems.
In the real world, I would suspect a more robust form of front end would be used. If you wanted to set up Amazon.com you might need to think about alternative solutions, but if you will not have a large number of simultaneous users Data Access Pages may suit you.
Warning. Not based on exhaustive experiment.

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 7, 2001 at 6:16 pm #513757What you want to do is possible. You will need to store the .mdb file on a web server and write a simple front end for the users to update the table.
The front end however can’t be created in Access you’ll need to use ASP or Java or something along these lines.
The version of Access probably wont matter as Access in this instance will only be the data store.

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 8, 2001 at 2:33 am #513849In my opinion, data access pages are toys that Microsoft stuck in there to suck developers into its more powerful (and expensive) web-related technology. They work fine on an intranet where everyone has Access, but that’s about all they’re intended for except getting your feet wet in the web.
