AskWoody PlusJanuary 21, 2016 at 2:59 pm #47728Woody,upon reviewing your info about all the corrupt updates. I realized that I had many on my pc that I couldn’t get rid of. It was acting a little funny so I did a factory reinstall, and from windows 8.1 it reverted to windows 8. Recently I was able to upgrade back to 8.1 but being careful of which updates I allow. My questions are there any updates safe to download and install? I realize now that MS creates chaos in order to implement an update to correct. Mostly the only gain made is them getting more control over our computers.Would it be wise to only have security updates and load certain windows updates only when we have certain pc issues? I don’t want win 10, but I still want the pc to run at peak performance

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 22, 2016 at 3:39 am #47730I guess this is one more reason to use an email client and store your mails locally. I’m still on Outlook 2003, which is supposed to be “dangerous” by now, since it’s unsupported by Microsoft and therefore open to exploits and malware (in theory).
However, in a world where Microsoft itself is the malware, standard thinking (which happens to be inspired by none other than Microsoft) might be a tad obsolete.

GuestJanuary 22, 2016 at 5:57 pm #47731While it’s no doubt true that an unsupported email client “is open to exploits and malware (in theory)”, that risk ought to be mitigated at least to some extent by the anti-virus program that users have hopefully set up to check downloaded emails especially before they are opened or acted upon e.g. in relation to attachments.
What particularly annoys me these days is the growing trend for companies to shorten their emails by limiting their content and providing links in the email to a website where the full content can be viewed. Yes Windows Secrets, I’m looking at you!
In my view, for companies that specialise in advising on good computer practice to be promoting the clicking on links in emails is poor, to say the least.
