• Outlook SMTP not working.

I am setting up MS Office 365. I am trying to get the Outlook (64-bit) working, but cannot get the Send function working.

To avoid dealing with mega amounts of mail, I set up my GMail and my AOL accounts first, and after those are working I will put in my main Microsoft account.

But neither account’s Send function is working. Both accounts leave the mail in the Outbox.

Using the Control Panel Mail applet, I have verified both accounts as working for both the IMAP and the SMTP servers.

I have no idea what is wrong or how to find what is wrong. What am I missing or doing incorrectly here?

Have you got a VPN active perhaps? I find that I often can’t send anything with a VPN active. As soon as I close the VPN, all goes well.

I Haven’t set up the VPN as yet, so no.

Additionally, I can send/receive to/from both accounts using online access, so it has to be something in my Outlook setup that is wrong.  I just don’t know what the heck that might be.

Is there a way to run a “repair” on Outlook or on MS Office?

Is there a way to run a “repair” on Outlook or on MS Office?

        Open Control Panel

        Select Programs

        Select Programs and Features

        Find Microsoft Office 365

        Select Uninstall or Change

Select repair and follow the prompts.

I’ve found that with certain versions of Office (365) I can’t use the old fashioned control panel, I have to use the Apps and features settings (new control panel), so if the only option you get via going into control panel is uninstall, stop and go into apps and features and try there instead.

          @Dana,

          Yes it did.

          Thanks.

I have never had this happen before.  “Usually” I installed Office 365 and set up my Outlook e-mail accounts without issue.

      Not this time.

I set up my GMail and my AOL accounts. Both receive e-mail fine, but neither is able to send.

Both accounts show as valid and operational when I check them via the Control Panel / Mail applet, so I have no flipping idea what is wrong.

Here’s my question:  If I restore a backup that I made just before installing Office, then when I set up the account(s) in Outlook, since both are IMAP accounts, won’t they be able to then re-download all the mail, since I didn’t delete the mail, but rather restored from the backup the disk image in total?

Just a thought.  Did you set one of the accounts as default?  Outlook sends default account first and if not set will get confused.

Check you settings with those accounts.  Many ISPs are requiring an email service generated passcode to be allowed to send emails.

Make sure you are on line when trying to send.

Open Outlook in safe mode and see if any extension is causing the problem.  Outlook safe mode>> Hold Ctrl key while clicking the outlook icon to open it.  Outlook will ask you if you want to open in safe mode.

Did you let Outlook setup the accounts automatically?

      • #2371353

Dana, “Requires Authentication” was and is checked.

      • #2371356

Joe, Yup.  Both auto and manually.

Joe, I got it working in theory, but it can take up to an hour to download/sync.  And that’s over cable hookup.

What happens if you check the send function using File/Account Settings/Manage Profiles?

And what happens if you go into the Outbox and select the message and tell it to Send?

    • #2370992

The account tests as being “fine” via the Microsoft Outlook Mail applet in the Control panel, but sending and/or receiving can take …ready?…up to an hour to totally complete.

What is it that I am missing or setting incorrectly?

I have it set now at

      IMAP 993 SSL/TLS
      SMTP  465  SSL/TLS

Attached is a screenshot of my GMail settings.  The IMAP settings seem to work, but I cannot for the life of me get any combination of settings to work for the SMTP.

Since I do not think I am the only one using GMail in Outlook 365, and yet I hear no chorus of similar complaints, it has to be something in my settings.

I found nothing of help through using Google.

I tried deleting the account and then resetting it, both manually and by letting Outlook do it, but the problem remains.

What the heck could I be doing wrong here?

I have tried everything I can think of, and some others have thought of.  The following settings were found on the net:

For now change your Incoming and Outgoing servers to imap.googlemail.com and smtp.googlemail.com respectively instead of *.gmail.com. Leads to the same machines @ google but whatever code is looking for .gmail.com won’t fire.

      GMail:
      imap.gmail.com 993 SSL
      smtp.gmail.com 587 TLS

      Those didn’t work.

I tried deleting the account and having Outlook set it up automatically.  That didn’t work either.

And I tried using 465 for the SMTP portal.  No go.

I don’t hear a bunch of other people with the issue, so what the heck am I doing wrong??GMail-In-Outlook

Log into GMail through your browser (on the web).
In the upper right click on Settings (cog) then See All setting.
On the pop/IMAP tab, at the bottom, click on email client configuration settings.
There are settings and at the bottom, there are troubleshooting tips.
This is what I see on the settings page.

Try unsubscribing from some folders, just as a test.

Right click on “Gmail” in your Outlook folder list, select IMAP folders, click Subscribed tab, then Query. And unsubscribe from all except the Inbox.

    • #2371185

      @Vincenzo, thanks, I’ll try that.

      @PKCano; if “Option 1” doesn’t work I’ll try using POP…but I SO don’t want to do that.

On the Outgoing Server  (On Outgoing Server tab of settings) – Requires Authentication must be checked.

Increase Server timeout (your setting of 1 minute may be too short to make complete connection)

Also try sending an email with Outlook in Safe Mode.  Your short timeout and some Outlook extension (like AV software) may be timing out before full connection can be made to send an email.  Outlook in Safe Mode will not use the extensions.

My suggestion to reduce the number of subscribed folders was based on your comment that send/receive was taking a long time. But reading here today I think you are saying the sending part (SMTP) is  the problem. If that is so, that previous suggestion would not help. That helps troubleshoot receiving problems.

But looking at my IMAP settings for Gmail, i have Outgoing Server at 587 with STARTTLS.
