I have a simple rule that says: move message with X for the subject to X folder (which is just a subfolder of my inbox.) The email arrives, goes to the correct subfolder, but a copy is also left in the Inbox. In other words, it copies instead of moves the email to the subfolder. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I also have a rule that forwards to another recipient. It forwards fine, but does not place a copy in the Sent items. So I never really know that it was sent.

    Thanks.

Can you post the “narrative” of your two rules? It’s the stuff you see in the lower part of the Modify/Edit dialog, as illustrated in this post:

Feel free to change any personal or incriminating information to “XYZ” or whatever.

I’ll try to include a screenshot.

You might want to add “and Stop Processing More Rules” to this one, in case Outlook is leaving a copy in the Inbox to apply other rules to it.

I’d also suspect that there may be other rules involved in processing this.
I agree, generally adding ‘stop processing more rules’ after all rules when they have identified their unique action is a good defense for odd behaviour.

And here’s the one that does not put a copy in Sent items. Thanks for all your help.

I don’t have any rules like this, so I don’t know how they are supposed to work… do the copies of outgoing messages end up in the Inbox or anywhere else??

I just tested this on my work installation of Outlook 2003 and Exchange. I have a twist in my standard setup that goes like this: I do not save anything to my default Sent Folder, via an Outlook Rule I copy all Sent messages to a ‘~Sent’ Folder in my PST (it keeps my server side mailbox usage low).

I found that with my normal settings, including NOT saving items to Sent folder, the Forward worked but a copy was not retained in my Sent Folder.

Then I set the following to checked: Tools | Options | Email Options | Save copies of messages in Sent items folder. This time when I ran the forwarding Rule, the item was copied to my default Sent Folder.

See if you have settings that might have the same affect.

Thanks guys for all your help, really appreciate it. I’ll try your suggestions and see what happens.

jscher2000 – the copies of outgoing messages do not end up in any folder that I’m aware of.
