I have recently discovered that Outlook doesn’t always seem to close properly when I shut it down. It seems to be remaining as a background process in memory even though the application itself has supposedly been closed. It seems to be related to either ZoneAlarm version 7 or Uniblue SpeedUpMyPC but my gut instinct is that it is ZoneAlarm since the problem has been manifesting itself for much longer than Uniblue has been on the scene.

Aside from the fact that it is taking RAM to run in the background, it also creates a ZoneAlarm crash when the computer is left idle. Not a big deal, but definitely a pain.

Has anyone got any bright ideas? Right now, I’m pulling up the task manager to see if it is still running and killing Outlook.exe if it is still there.

Do you have the ZoneAlarm firewall only, or the full Internet Security suite (including Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware)? It seems improbable that the firewall would cause Outlook to remain in memory, but the e-mail scanner in the Anti-Virus component might do that. You might try turning this off temporarily to see if the problem goes away.

Do you have any Outlook add-ins? A badly-written add-in could cause Outlook to remain in memory.
Other possible culprits are fax software and software to synchronize with a PDA.

Yes, it is the full internet security and I agree with you that it is probably the email scanner that is doing it.

After posting this, I did some further testing. I turned off Zone Alarm completely and Outlook behaved normally. Of course, after I turned Zone Alarm back on, Outlook still behaved normally hairout. I will have to do some further testing so I can try to consistently duplicate the problem.

This only started with version 7 and I know they have changed/upgraded their email scanning software in this version. I suppose I need to spend sometime on the far-less-easy-to-navigate user forum over there.

If the problem reappears, you might try the following:
          – In Outlook, select Tools | Options…
          – Activate the Other tab.
          – Click Advanced Options…
          – Click > Com Add-Ins…
          – Clear the check box for the MailBuddy Outlook Addin.
          – OK your way out.

It is definitely the ZoneAlarm Spam (Mailfrontier) add-in, Turning off Junk Mail in ZA fixes it. This problem has been with me and ZoneLabs for several months and has FINALLY been escalated to a higher level of support in ZLabs. If they fix it in a future release, don’t hold your breath. Another solution is to revert to an older version of ZA – the conflict happened after version 6.5.722. There is a thread on the ZoneLabs user forum about this
