Outlook stopped updating and News and Interests stopped working at the same time.  Tried restarting and also tried SFC /Scannow.  This has occurred several times where both applications were not working.  The only solution was to use System Restore.  Has this happened to anyone else?  Any idea what could be causing the problem?

      It broke again?

Okay so what ELSE is installed?  go through your list of security software, add ins, desktop customizations?

It annoyingly is there for me all the time.

      Is the ISP having issues?

      Router failing?

Security software is Windows Defender.  Did not notice any issues with ISP or router.  Before SR, turned News and Interests off and on, no change.  In the past, sometimes Windows Spotlight would not change but Outlook were still updating.  Only fix then was SR.  Could all three issues be related to MS Edge?

    • #2531177

It is highly unlikely to be Edge.

Have you checked Task Manager to see what is running when the problem occurs?

Have you checked the Event Logs for errors?

Checked both and could not see anything that was causing the problem.  What I thought was unusual was that Windows Outlook (Actually Microsoft 365) and News and Interests were not updating.  Trying to figure what the too applications have in common.

Does anyone know of a tech website I could post this problem to where they could help me troubleshoot?  I am sure there must be an answer to why both of these (Outlook) and (News and Interests) will not update.  The only remedy I have is to System Restore.  I would rather figure out what is causing the problem.  Suggestions?  Or am I not posting in the right place at AW?  Thanks.

Noticed yesterday that News and Interests were not working again.  This time I went to group policy editor then

In the left pane of the Local Group Policy Editor, click/tap on to expand Computer Configuration, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, and News and interests.

and changed it from “Not Configured” to “Enabled”

Not sure why, but it worked.  Also noticed this fixed the Weather Tile on the Start Menu was now working.

            Anyone else experiencing this issue?

Revisiting again.  Problem reoccurred.  Not as concerned about News and Interests.  I only mention it here as a symptom.  Seems like Outlook will not update AND News and Interests is not working.  Cannot find anything in Event Viewer  that would point to a problem.  Not really sure I know how to read it for evidence of an issue.  Also possible – as a clue – that Windows Spotlight does not change.

Any suggestions?  Any other site I could post this to where someone might have an answer?

Resolution so far has only been to use System Restore.

              Thanks.

Are you having issues with your isp? Use security or privacy blockers?

No issues with ISP – Verizon Fios.  Recently upgraded to 1G from 100M.  However problem was also happening before that.

No security or privacy blockers.  Outlook is from company however same program on office computer with no problems.

Also noted that the last two times the problem occurred the next morning after it was working fine the evening before.  Not sure where to look in Event Viewer to see if I could trace what caused it.

              Thanks.

When I click on “About Outlook” Microsoft Outlook for Microsoft 365 MSO Version 2308 Build 16.0.16731.20182) 64 bit

but next to “About Outlook” it says

Now on Version 2308 (Build 16731.20234) Click to Run) Current Channel

Think I may be on a semi-annual channel at home and office is on current channel

The saga continues… happened again.  There must be some way to investigate this.  Does anyone have any suggestions of where I can start?

Symptoms: Outlook does not update and News and Interests stops working.  The only remedy I have found is to System Restore.

Checked Event Viewer, did not see any errors that contributed to the problem.

              Appreciate any insight.

Repair install over the top or sfc /scannow help in any way?

Did not try sfc /scannow.  However when I tried last time, looked like it was ok.

Never tried Repair/Install – not sure how.  Does it erase any files or is it just like System Restore?

This time computer had no problems for about two months – since 9/25.  Guess that is an improvement.  This time when I restored the program, reinstalled TurboTax (since it said it could not read the signature), I set a System Restore point so I could go back to it.  However, when the problem happen again, that restore point was no help.  I had to go back to the previous restore point to get the programs working.  This time I tried to use the Microsoft System and Recovery Assistant (SARA) but that would not work.  The only option was to restore.

To update anyone who has not read this yet these are the symptoms: Microsoft 365 does not update, News and Interests does not work, Microsoft Spotlight does not change.  And now I know that SARA does not work.

There has to be someone who has experience the same symptoms

Also used Macrium Reflect (Free) and saved a Drive Image

              Any error message?

            • #2614765

              Thanks for asking.

No – it just blinked a screen but did not load.  After I did a System Restore, I was able to update it and it worked.  Seems like when this happens there are four applications that do not update: News and Interests, Outlook, Windows Spotlight, SARA (which actually will load but not work).   Not ready to make this association but I did notice the error listed below.  Susan asked if I was having ISP problems – I was not, however, her suggestion made me think this is some type of communication problem.

Noticed this error (Event Viewer: Windows Logs/System) about the same time:

              Warning 12/22/2023 10:01:15 PM DistributedCOM 10016 None

The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Launch permission for the COM Server application with CLSID
              Windows.SecurityCenter.WscBrokerManager
and APPID Unavailable to the user NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM SID (S-1-5-18) from address LocalHost (Using LRPC) running in the application container Unavailable SID (Unavailable). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool.

Dcom errors are pretty typical and pretty unable to be diagnosed worth a darn.

I would still strongly suggest a repair install over the top.

        Susan,

Once I do a System Restore is that better than Repair Install or is a RI?  Or are you saying that even though I do a SR, the problem is still not solved and I will eventually have to do a RI?

        • #2614817

A system restore just leaves any non functional bits as they were.  A repair install will fix OS corruption better than scan and dism.

Thought all might be interested to know that early last year – around February 2024 I had a problem downloading some drivers Windows was asking me to load, System Restore seemed to hang up or I did not wait long enough, did a Repair Install which completed but I did not update.  Decided instead to remove drive install a cloned drive that I had prepared before the problem occurred and since then all the problems mentioned above have disappeared.

              Silent corruption on the disk?
              What are the SMART stats?

              cheers, Paul
