Outlook Express Finished??

I have heard that Microsoft is ‘discontinuing’ Outlook Express, and that after September 1 it will not be possible to access Hotmail via OE. What is the true story regarding this? I do not access Hotmail via OE so that is not a problem for me. Will I be able to continue using OE for my normal email as I have done in the past or is it all going to fall over?

Outlook Express is entering its “end-of-life” phase. It will continue working, but it will no longer be supported by Microsoft. You will still be able to use it for your ‘normal’ e-mail.

Microsoft will discontinue WebDAV, the protocol used to access Hotmail from Outlook Express, on September 1, 2009. They originally planned to do that in 2008, but extended it for a year after protests.

You can freely download and install the successor to Outlook Express: Windows Live Mail. It uses a newer protocol to access Hotmail, and it is more stable than Outlook Express.

Having used OE for many years without problems, I am inclined to the “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” philosophy. Therefore I think I will stick with it. Besides there is always the chance that transferring my contacts list and archived folders going back over twelve years may run into problems. What are your thoughts?

Have you switched to Windows Live Mail? From the link you gave for downloading Windows Live Mail it appears to be an orphan child instead of a main line program.
I did read Woody Leonard’s article in Windows Secrets in which he recommends dropping Outlook Express at this time but he was not that positive that Windows Live Mail was the best alternative. What are your views on this situation??

I use WLM for a couple of hotmail & live accounts and also as a news group reader. What makes you think WLM is an orpahn? It is part of the Microsoft “Live” suite of programs. Since there is no mail client shipped with the latest Microsoft oerpating system (Windows 7) the user will have to install something if they want a mail client. Microsoft is hoping that people will download the Live suite or that Microsoft can make deals with OEMs to pre-load the Live suite.

I don’t use Windows Live Mail myself; I use Outlook.

As Joe Perez mentioned, Windows Live Mail is not an orphan, it is part of the Windows Live suite of applications and Microsoft has no plans to drop it.

Thanks for your reply. I’m glad to learn that you do not consider Windodws Live Mail an orphan.
I currently have a program called Windows Live Hotmail installed listed as an option for using
e-mail in Internet Explorer. Is there a difference between Windows Live Mail and Windows Live Hotmail ?? Which would be your preference ??

Microsoft’s naming is very confusing.

Windows Live Hotmail is a webmail service – the successor of (or new name of) Hotmail.
Windows Live Mail is a stand-alone e-mail client. It can be used to access (Windows Live) Hotmail but also to access standard (pop3) e-mail.
