I suspect this must be a common problem: when I close Outlook, the program seemingly shuts down, its icon disappears from the Taskbar, but when I open the Task Manager, Outlook is still there.

One inconvenience when this happens is that if I reopen Outlook, the toolbars’ buttons arrangement is messed up, ie, the buttons are not laid out the way I had them arranged before closing Outlook. A second, more obvious, inconvenience is of course having 33 MB less of idle memory to run other applications more smoothly.

Does anyone know why this happens? Any clues on what to do or what not to do?

    Thanks

There are some old threads on this that you should search and review. Outlook takes a long minute to close as it cleans up after itself, Outlook’s taskbar behavior makes it easy to unknowingly open more than one copy, all Outlook windows (such as message or separate calendar windows) must be closed, and some third party software, especially PDA sync software, holds Outlook open. If these don’t help, post back.

        Hi John,

I’ll check out on the first two choices. I was aware that every Outlook item had to be closed in order for Outlook to close, and I don’t have any PDA sync software, so the last two can be discarded.
I’ll search for the first two then. Thanks.

        Ok, I revised old posts.
The problem repeated today. When I saw Outlook was running when it should have shut down, I left my machine idle for two hours. When I returned, Outlook was still running, so the first choice (Outlook takes a long minute to close) is discarded.
I wonder if the SpamBayes complement might have something to do?

I don’t run SpamBayes, but an easy test would be to disable the add-in (not sure about the OL 2000 menus, but it should be something like Tools | Options | Other | Advanced | Add-Ins, uncheck SpamBayes), and close, restart and then close Outlook, and see if it gets held open.
