… workaround article from July mitigates issue (sort of):

… but if you go to ‘Account’ in any office app, and close the app (such as Word or PowerPoint) – the app does not actually close. You have to kill it in task manager before Outlook will open again as per the article:

    https://support.office.com/en-us/article/outlook-won-t-open-or-is-stuck-at-loading-profile-6d9590bb-3c0f-4caf-9599-d5cf6b5d3bd0

This just started this morning on two systems running Office 365 on Win10 1909.

    Office Build | Version 2002 12527.20242

    Anyone else seeing this?

Very annoying (and a bit scary). As with the recent issues with Win10 search box. It looks like changes MS makes on the server side can have severe impact on local users.

Quick addendum … If you go to File > Account after making the changes described on the article (although the first box for me is checked, but grayed out, so I could only uncheck the second box), apps seem to fully close.

But if you click on your name at the top of the app to access your account, the issue returns.

So, this really seems to be another MS server side issue impacting locally installed apps.

I am not 100% certain yet, but it seems that MS resolved the issue. I flipped the ‘show pictures’ toggle back on, closed Outlook … opened/closed Word … started Outlook without issue. No updates came down that were visible to the user, and the Office version number is the same. Hmmmm …

Strange that Microsoft fixed it seven months ago and you’re seeing it now.

Although the same bug could have returned with the latest monthly update on March 1st, perhaps it was just a temporary service issue this time?

There are apparently some current undefined sign-in issues: https://status.office365.com/

(“Users may be unable to sign in to (the Admin Portal or one or more) Office 365 services.”)

Here is all I know … I applied the March 1 update manually (check for updates, I know I know – I am a gluten) on Monday morning. No issues at all until this morning. Launched Word. Closed Word. Launched Outlook – stuck on loading profile.

Found the KB article. Killed Word in task manager (it was still running, although should not have been). Outlook opened.

Interestingly, my profile pic was not displaying immediately in my installed apps – just the generic ‘head.’ If I clicked on ‘manage account,’ Chrome would open, I would log in, my profile pic would appear.

I then determined that as long as my profile pic did NOT resolve, no issue. If I managed to get the profile pic to display by logging into my account via browser (or sometimes it would appear after 5-10 minutes), that’s when the above issue manifested! Very weird.

At any rate, about an hour ago, I toggled back on the settings  that the KB article suggested to toggle off … and now the profile pic displays immediately without my having to be creative … and no issues loading Outlook (or other apps closing completely).

Something def at MS’s end – and another example of how even local apps can  get boinked if MS does something at their end. End of the world? No. Disconcerting? Most certainly.

Just an addendum: Do I really care if my profile pic doesn’t display because the connection to the mothership is wonky for a bit? No,  of course not.

Do I care if that connection to the mothership prevents locally installed apps from shutting down or not being able to launch Outlook – which I live in – without breaking into cold sweats and/or doing digital acrobatics? Yeah, I really do. That’s unacceptable.
