Outlook 2010 crashes when I try open some messages. The message either does not open or begins to and then I get an error message saying that “Microsoft Outlook has stopped working,” with a choice to check online for solutions or to restart the program. When it restarts, it runs fine until I click on one of the suspect messages and then it fails again. I am not sure yet, but I suspect that the messages that cause the problem are all from Mac users. When I look at the addons, there are several Microsoft ones which I presume were put there by default as I did not add them, and iTunes. Is it possible that the iTunes addon is interfering somehow with reading messages from Apple machines? Or is this perhaps a nefarious Microsoft plot to thrwart the growth of Apple. I do not see how to remove the iTunes addon, and I have looked both in Outlook and iTunes for a way to do so. Does anyone know how to remove it and of a solution for this problem if it is not the addon?

    TIA,

Occasionally I have a similar problem with Spamaid in Outlook 2007. When Outlook shuts down, I have to open Outlook in the “Safe Mode” and disable Spamaid to keep it from loading when Outlook starts up.

To open in Safe Mode, hold down your Control key prior to opening Outlook, then clicking the Outlook icon. This will force Outlook to load without loading any of your plug-ins. After it has opened, got to the Tools drop down menu and open the Trust Center. Then click on Add-Ins. After the Add-Ins page opens, you will see all of your add-ins and check boxes to the left side. Uncheck those add-ins that you think might be problems.

Then close Outlook and then re-open. This should hopefully solve your problem in the Normal Mode. If you have disabled a number of add-ins, you can troubleshoot by enabling them one by one until you find the culprit. Once you have narrowed it down to the problem add-in, you can check the ‘Net to see if anyone has solved this problem.

      Good luck – Jimmy

Thanks for the input, Jimmy. I have now disabled all of the add-ins, and the problem persists. I have looked through the MS knowledge bases, but it seems that usually in cases like this the add-ins are causing the problem. Something else is causing it here.

Do you get the same behavior in Outlook safe mode? If so it may be a corrupted pst file – scanpst.exe may resolve that issue.

    • #1246909

Yes, I just tried it in safe mode and the problem still occurs.

Have you tried running scanpst.exe against your PST file to see if it finds any corruption?

Yes, I ran scanpst.exe and it found some problems and fixed them, but the shutdowns still persist.

        Fault Module Name: USP10.DLL

That DLL appears to be associated with Uniscribe (Wikipedia link). Not sure how that is coming into play or whether it can be repaired. (I would not recommend downloading it from alternate sources on the web!)

Problem solved. I found the answer on another forum, where a user with the same problem reported that deleting his Adobe Helvetica font solved the crash problem in Outlook 2010. On my computer, the Helvetica font installed was not Adobe, but deleting it still stopped the crashes. I put in a ticket to MS about the problem, but I won’t hold my breath that they will fix it. Anyway, thanks to all who offered suggestions.

Thank you for posting the solution!

I put in a ticket to MS about the problem, but I won’t hold my breath that they will fix it.

I don’t think Microsoft distributes any Helvetica fonts. They created the Arial TrueType font to avoid having to pay license fees for Helvetica.

Unfortunately after having deleted the Helvetica font the problem is still occurring.

Any other suggestions would be most welcome thanks.

I have been struggling with this issue for a few weeks now, tried everything, finally found a solution.
The issue seems to be printer related. I had previously installed additional printer services for another project I had been working on, when I removed these everything started working…
to check what printer services you have installed…………….

        Windows 7
        goto Control PanelProgramsPrograms and Features
click “turn windows features on or off”
goto Print and Document features and untick all except Windows Fax & Scan
