Outlook 2007 Crashing on Start-up

I have a very new problem: last night, my computer (Lenovo T61 in a docking station w/external monitor) crashed while unattended. When I restarted, and tried to restart Outlook 2007, it started to load and then simply vanished. Once there was a message, something about being unable to load files because someone else had modified them. This hasn’t reappeared when I’ve tried to restart Outlook. I have rebooted twice, tried to restore from a Mozy backup, but the program simply starts, I see it, and then it vanishes.

I am running XP sp3. Outlook 2007 with Business Contact Manager and Office 2007 Ultimate.

One possibility is damage to the data file(s). Can you run the Inbox Repair Tool (ScanPST.exe)? See: How to find and run the Inbox Repair tool in Outlook, How to use the Inbox Repair Tools to recover e-mail messages in Outlook 2002, Outlook 2003, and Outlook 2007. Does that make any difference?

You can repair your installation of Office, although you may need to have your installation media (or network-based install point) handy. Close all Office application, then:

Start > All Programs > Microsoft Office > Microsoft Office Tools > Microsoft Office Diagnostics.

Thank you for the suggestions. I first tried to restore replace the two pst files I was loading with yesterday’s back ups. Did not work

Then, I tried your suggestion to use the Inbox Repair Tool. One of files had errors, and I clicked to repair it. Other file had only ‘minor inconsistencies’ and I repaired that as well. Same problem, tried to load Outlook and it crashed as it tried to load (while “databinding”)

Then, I tried the diagnostics, which showed no problems.

Last, I tried to repair the Outlook installation with my handy dandy original disks.

Rebooted. Same problem. Start outlook, and the program window comes up, says it’s loading items, says its databinding, and then it just vanishes.

I searched on crashes related to “databinding” and the most promising result was a thread saying it can be caused by Indexing (which you can turn off). See: outlook 2007 Databinding freeze / crash on startup – Tech Support Guy Forums.

Note that he identified the problem by checking the Windows event logs, which probably is a good idea to do before making any configuration changes.

Start > Run > eventvwr.exe

Thanks! I was finally able to get outlook to run in safe mode. In that mode, I closed both the archive I was opening along with my ‘main’ pst file and business contact manager, compacted everything, and was able to get Outlook to load normally with only the ‘main’ pst file.

I am saving your final suggestion for the next step if this happens again.
