I just had to rebuild my system and in the process applied all fixes to outlook 2003. I am running XP sp-3 with all fixes applied.

The junk mail filter is treating over 90% of my email as junk. Everything is marked SPAM

I set the filter switch to “No Automatic Filtering” – that did not change any thing.

I exported all of my contacts email addresses and manually put them in the Safe Sender table. That didn’t fix any thing.

Is there any way to “uninstall” the junk mail filtering system?

You probably have another spam filter running. Are you on a corporate network? Do you have a blocked sender list?

My system is a home system, I run AVG and Zonealarm. The blocked Sender List has two entries in it – I’m not sure how they got there – both are porn sites off the net (An old coot like me wouldn’t go to porn sites!!!).

This morning every email (8) was marked as Spam. The 4 senders all were in my contacts, and were among the Safe Senders list that I built from my contacts. I exported and imported my contacts into the safe sender list.

I do remember that prior to rebuilding my system, I am positive I had not put all of the fixes on Outlook. As I remember, I applied and Outlook SP-3 as part of my rebuild process.

Tom, could you show us how they are marked as Spam by posting a picture of such an email, censored for any personal information?

Is AVG just the Anti-Virus version or is it the Security Suite?

This is a reply to two questions

My copy of AVG is not their Security Suite – not sure what it is called.

The mail goes into inbox and then Outlook transfers the message to the “Junk E Mail folder”, the header is marked “[SPAM]” – nothing else is changed. I manually have to go into the Junk E Mail Folder and individually mark each message as “Not Junk” – then Outlook transfers each individual message back to the inbox, leaving the “[SPAM]” marking.

If for some reason I have Outlook on the screen, I can see the messages go into the inbox and then be transferred to the Junk E Mail folder. I was surprised the first time I saw this occur.

I have two smtp (POP mail) accounts – one with gmail and one with msn. Outlook provides separate inboxes and Junk E Mail boxes for each. Most of my email comes thru the gmail account. That is one reason this is so annoying because gmail has an excellent set of filters itself. if a message makes it thru the gmail filters, it certainly isn’t spam.

I will admit that most of my email is stuff that a business would consider SPAM – jokes, video clips, etc.

You’ve got to have an Outlook rule running or a third part spam filter running. The normal Outlook spam filter does not prefix the Subject at all.

Exactly as Joe says – the native Outlook Spam filter does NOT change the subject line – that sounds more like Norton/Symantec AntiSpam. For starters, in Outlook look under Tools | Options | Other | Advanced Options | both the Add-in Manager and Com Add-Ins lists and if anything is checked which you do not recognize, uncheck it and see if the behavior changes.

I am pretty sure it is the AVG Anti-Spam component.

      The AI mgr had :
      Outlook Connector Checked
      AVG Exchange Ext checked
      Exch Prop pages checked

I unchecked AVG and the Exchange Ext

Went into AVG and into their Anti-Spam component and it specifically says it marks the headers as spam and moves to the Outlook Junk Mail folder

      I uninstalled AVG’s anti-spam component

Thanks for the help – I am pretty sure AVG was the culprit – I won’t know for sure until Monday AM – leaving for a trip and will be gone all week end.

I will update this entry Monday when I see what happened, but at this time – I am confident it was AVG. Earlier I had to disable another component of AVG because it was taking over my system – not sure AVG is worth the money.

      Thanks again

Some ISP’s will add this “Spam” notation, who is providing your Email?

Turning off AVG’s email spam component solved the problem.

I got a note from AVG’s product support people that confirmed that AVG was the problem.

I now have had to turn off AVG’s link scanner – it was eating every spare cycle on my system, and their spam email support.

I am not real excited about the money I spent on AVG

Thanks for all the suggestions that helped me track this down.
