My Outlook (2002 SP2) is suddenly glacially slow – 10-15 seconds to open a simple email message (no html, no photos etc.)
Having gone through the threads, I have done/verified the following:
    – Instant Messenging is Disabled
    – I unloaded all my add-ins (Junk-Out)
    – I disabled the PalmPilot link
    – I cleaned out & compacted the database – but this is not the problem anyway, because if I copy the *.pst file to a different computer, it runs normally
    – I even went so far as to completely uninstall and re-install all of Offiice

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

This seems to be going around. For example, right now, the very next thread is “sluggish behavior”. Seems you’ve not had the same luck killing Messenger, etc.

Do you have a good antivirus/mailware/trojan scanner? System clean?

Nope – fully updated Symantec anti-virus (9/18). I even ran a full virus scan and optimized the hard drive. Still very very sow.

I have just had the same problem with OL2000 on my normally very reliable XP Home Machine. I was horrified to see that my 80GB hard drive had only 12GB free – going through my drive in Explorer I noticed that I had folders created by McAfee that were taking up 50GB which I think must be related to the way that the Virus Shield now synchronises and updates without my knowledge. I deleted them to no ill effect and Outlook is now back to its usual self. It might be worth checking to see if Symantec is taking over huge portions of your hard drive with temporary folders.

Thanks for the suggestion – but no, not a lot of temp files. Things improved marginally when I defragged the disk & cleaned up the hard drive generally, but not really significantly.

Are you still having this problem? If so, have you installed anything that might have changed networking/internet connections. It could be a problem with RPC or TCP/IP stack.

Yes, the problem still exists. It started up at one point suddenly. However, I have not as far as I know changed or added any connections. Since the problem comes when actually opening an existing email (i.e., it is just reading the pst file on the local hard drive), it doesn’t seem likely that it is a TCP/IP issue. I have no idea how to troubleshoot RPC issues.
Basically, I have given up & just moved it to another PC. Not as convenient but I’m tired of fighting it.

Just to ease your mind – it’s not a TCP/IP problem when it comes to opening an item – unless the pst file is on another system.
RPC is largely undocumented. But it uses TCP/IP as a transport, so it’s likely not that either.
