I ran into one of those several days ago. Our problem was a large number (~100) graphs spread across 20 worksheets. We found this KB entry Q168650. It explained that with a certain defaultm, each graph required 2 font entries. It defines a reg hack that drops it to 1 font entry per graph. It goes on to explain that there is a fixed max of 256 fonts in Excel 97. Even though all graphs may be using the same font they each need their own entry. The reg hack have us 100 more possable graphs which allows the user to finish the project Hope this helps

You can get rid of obsolote styles by exporting the file to HTML format and reading it back.

        Jan Karel,

That might work in XL2000- but XL 97 “Save AS HTML” gives an entirely different result. So much so that I still use XL97 to save as a simple HTML where I can edit and make changes. XL2000 saves graphs, macros, formats- and a whole heap of things which are not saved in XL97.

Riknowoi might be able to post the troublesome spreadsheet, and have a helpful lounger convert it to XL2000 HTML and back to xls.
