In addition to the “normal” Windows 10 updates (my most recent being KB 5015807), an Optional Quality update is offered (current being KB5015878).

I see no reference to the optional 5015878 update in the patch list.  Any idea where they fit int0 the Defcon schemes?

Never update them?  Update them at the same time as the “normal” update?  Something else?

      deferrr

It’s there I just didn’t have the KB number at the time.  I always defer them.

What irks me is that I have my Win10 Pro Update Settings set so that it does not  (or at least not supposed to) check for or download updates for other apps or things like BIOS and firmware.  Yet, every single time my updates resume, they’re there.  And it doesn’t appear there is any way to either prevent them from downloading, or (worse) removing it from the list of items ready to install and/or restart.

If you let the clock run out on the deferral it will only install security updates and not auto install the optional ones.

Good god. I can’t tell if I’m too paranoid about installing updates, or not being able to understand which are risky, and which are not. Every time I try to figure it out, I’m confronted with a myriad of Ask Woody’s articles, Microsoft KB’s, and various links to related info.

I’m not an up-to-date IT pro, but I’m not totally ignorant, either. Is there any hope of understanding how to safely install updates?

      Thanks,
      Neil

I’ll boil down July’s updates with a series of questions:

        1. got usb printers?  If no, install July updates
        2. If yes to usb printers, are they label printers?  If no, install July updates *

*I’ve got usb based laser jet printers that have had no issues.

Keep in mind the optional updates are merely previews that you’ll get in August.
