Opinions -W2K over XP?

Hi folks,
I’m just posting this out of curiosity. I’ve got a client who has a couple of computers presently running WinXP Home, which he wants to network together. I’m recommending to him that he ditch XP in favor of Win2K professional. He got a second opinion that XP Professional would be preferable to Win2K (and XP Home).
My feeling is that XP has more secretive and “snoopy” code than Win2K, thus my recommendation.
Would anyone care to offer their opinion?

How does he want to network them? He can network XPH computers by using shares. If he want to get into security deeper than that I’d go with XPP. Much depends on how the PCs will be used.
This might ignite a bit of a discussion but IMHO XPP is the better OS. You can turn off the fluff you don’t need. I think it is more stable overall. I’m not sure what you mean about secretive and snoopy code. If you’re talking about product activation it has been shown by independent sources to not send personal information. I think that if you are reasonably careful when installing & setting up XP it is no more invasive than Win2k.

From a stability standpoint I know our Win2K laptops are better than our newer XP Pro laptops. No strange quirkiness, no driver issues and now with SP3 addressing another 800 zillion bugs it should be even more stable. So far the three best parts of XP are 1) Clear Type on a LCD, 2) Instant logging on to different networks, 3) Driver rollback (which wouldn’t be needed if XP wasn’t so finiky) As you can see I like Win2K. Just comparing my old laptop with Win2k and my wife’s new laptop with XP pro, I have had ZERO crashes since I installed Win2K (11/2yrs ago) and she gets mouse freeze regularly (even with the latest touchpad drivers) , and program crashes , as do millions of other users. All you need to do is look at this forum and the XP forum and see the difference in the quantity of problems and their severity.

I like them both, frankly – and I’ve had near zero problems with XP that weren’t of my own making. In fact, some of the usability features that exist in XP, including driver rollback, would be nice to have in Win2000. The only problem I see is when trying to install XP on hardware that is more than a year old, and that I expect because it’s brand new.

It’s worth noting that XP is Windows NT 5.1, and Windows 2000 is Windows NT 5.0. The version numbers can be viewed in System Properties. XP is Windows 2000 with a makeover and some minor plumbing changes. As with all software, maturity makes for a stable system – and that’s something XP doesn’t have yet.

I see none of this in Windows XP.
Are you going by first hand experience of second party told you so?
