On Linux Mint 20.3 last night I updated Opera from 101.0.4843.58 to 102.0.4880.16 using the Update Manager. Got the update but in addition to all bookmarks and history being wiped out, Opera thought it was an entirely new installation and wanted me to go through a new installation setup.

The night before I successfully did the same update on another Mint 20.3; everything seemed fine.

A couple hours before the above fiasco I tried to update Opera from the same old version as above on a Win 10 machine but was told Opera was up to date.

I haven’t tried to update Opera on a Mac.

This could have been a one-off event, but backup your bookmarks before updating Opera, make note of your settings, and be aware that even if you do backup bookmarks your history will likely not get backed up along with your bookmarks.

Bummer, sounds like the install took a big bite out of your profile enough so that Opera thought it was on a new installation instead of an upgrade installation. 😭

Is there any way for you to dig out files from a not-so-old profile on another machine that has a working copy of Opera? If so, then maybe you could copy those files over to your now-borked installation to make it fully functional.

I’m hoping that you’ve encountered what will very soon be described as a bug in the installer and will be patched much sooner than later in order to save others from the same lousy fate.

I’m thinking it might well be a bug. The update was sitting in the Mint Update Manager queue for a few days (IIRC, and I may not), which was why I was surprised when the Win 10 computer said it was up to date even though it still showed the older version. I’m thinking they might have pulled the new update.

I haven’t found the bug, but I did submit a bug report to Opera. I had almost all my bookmarks backed up so I was back up and running in about 15 minutes. Only lost a handful of bookmarks and all my history, the latter of which, for me, was of little to no consequence.
