Opera – a recommended browser?

I’m currently using Firefox, and I truly think that it’s currently the best browser available. it’s customization with addons makes it tailored to my needs, although it uses a lot of memory and sometimes crashes (not very often though). I’ve just recently heard about this Opera browser, but after reading on the web I see that it is also uses a lot of memory and has a serious problem of websites incompatibility. A lot of people claim that they cannot browse a lot of websites (some very popular, like Facebook,CNN) with this browser, or that web pages never stop loading. On the other hand, it is reported to be very fast and very secure.

Anybody here using Opera browser? What do you think about it?

I only use Opera occasionally for compatibility testing, so I don’t know whether it does in fact have problems with certain web sites. Often problems with endless loading are related to third party servers, especially ad servers. Firefox users who block ads or scripts may have forgotten having these problems in Firefox from time to time.

I use Opera 10.54 beta ( from here ) exclusively and very very rarely come across a site I can’t visit. As the web becomes more standard-compliant website incompatibilities become rarer. 

What you might find is that Opera doesn’t support addons in the same way as Firefox does, but I don’t find that a problem as that means there are less potential clashes where addons compete for resources and/or hooks. A lot of the addons that I might install in Firefox turn out to be enhancements to add functions that Opera has anyway out of the box   . Have a look at this rather old post here

I have the same experience as Jon.

I’m a Facebook user myself and have found some difficulty with applications created by third parties, and usually those difficulties are resolved quickly. However, lots of misinformed web authors choose to discriminate and exclude Opera from their web sites or parts of pages (like navigation menus). That frequently poses a problem. Mostly, those are easy to overcome, mainly by updates from Opera themselves. Sometimes, we are forced to toggle settings inside the browser itself, like identifying ourselves as Internet Explorer or Firefox.

Yes, there are problems with some sites loading forever. The Opera team constantly works with web authors to improve both the web site programming and Opera’s browser programming alike. Opera has its own forum and bug track system, where those problems are addressed.

Yes, if you’re a first-time Opera user, you will experience adjustment challenges. You will find that Opera expects a high-end user. Do visit the my.opera.com forums and ask for help. Switching from Firefox to Opera is easier than from Internet Explorer to Opera, because of the way how users treat their browser.
