For several days I haven’t been able to open Excel files from desktop shortcuts or from within the “MY DOCUMENTS” folder. When I try, I receive the message “Cannot find the file * (or one of its components). Make sure the path and file name are correct and that all required libraries are available.” I’m still able to open files within the open files dialog. Would reinstalling Excel fix the problem? I’m using Excel 97 SR-2. Thanks.

In Excel, look at Tools-Options-General, uncheck “Ignore Other Applications”

Thanks for your response. I did as you suggested and the problem was fixed. Any idea how the “Ignore other applications” box could have become checked?

Martin,
The only time I have seen that get checked, is when a user has checked it; but although I’m not sure how, I would not doubt that something else could have set it, such as a template. (There is an Application.IgnoreRemoteRequests property in VBA that could have done it).

I was using Excel with a DDE link to real-time financial data when I first noticed my problem if that might give you a clue as to the cause. Thanks again for your help.

How about re-connecting what type of program to use to open the file? From Windows Explorer, select View, then folder options. Then select File Types. Scroll down the list to Microsoft Excel Worksheet and highlight. Make sure that Opens with says Excel. If it doesn’t, you may have to edit it.

Thanks for the suggestion. I checked in the “file types” dialog and the Excel Workbooks entry was OK.
