I want to change the opened folder icon in Windows Explorer to something more visible. I often can’t tell which folder is open.
I have seen a lot of advice on the net for changing the icon, but nothing seems to work for me. Can anyone help ?

I’ve found it helpful in the past to have the open folder icon be green.

To change the default Explorer icon for an open folder, add the following String Value to HKLMSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerShell Icons:

      Value Name: 4
      Value Data (example): C:DDesktopIconsgreenfolder.ico,0.

4 is the value corresponding to the “open folder” icon.

Note that this kind of change doesn’t take effect until you rebuild the icon cache. I rebuild the icon cache using TweakUI–>Repair, although there may be other ways.

You can read more (and download a green folder icon if you want one) at this Tweak Central page

Shows ya how “ancient” I’m getting. I have on my web site ( http://www.alhoffman.org/visitors/%5B/url%5D ) two items that were originally pointed out by Woody in one of his newsletters oh so long ago (1st May 2001, Vol. 4 No.8). The two things have “green folder” in the name and the original is a zip file. I later added a revised .icl file and I don’t remember why. Anyway, the stuff is still there – back when it was a Woody tip, people were having trouble getting the stuff, so I put it on my site to help out ( post 176,863 ).

Thanks for the reply, st3333ve. I had tried that site, but couldn’t find the icon cache to delete. So I followed your method using Tweakui / Repair. Then rebooting. Still to no avail.
I will try Method 3a, editing Shell32.dll, which also needs to be followed by Tweakui/Repair, I presume.

Actually, the method 3a looked too daunting and dangerous, so I downloaded axialis iconworkshop, and used their Customize Windows (with icon cache rebuild) and it worked like a charm. What a great program.
Now I can see which folder I’m in.
