Occasionally I receive a winmail.dat file. How can I open that on a Mac? I tried opening my Mail in Outlook. That didn’t work.

    Thanks!

      Nathan,

      https://osxdaily.com/2016/04/19/open-winmail-dat-file-mac-os-x/

This is about two years old, so probably is still OK. The free application mentioned as one of the ways to open “.dat” emails might, or might not be 64 bit, so people running Catalina might or might not be able to use it. But the other methods look OK to me.

The comments to the article look interesting too. Good luck.

Thanks! I tried the THEF’s Enough app since it says it’s updated for Catalina, so I know it’ll work when I upgrade to Catalina. So far so good. Thanks again!

In my experience, if you send an email with an attachment, the receiver may see a winmail.dat attachment instead of the actual attachment.  In my case, it was because the sender was inadvertently sending the mail in Rich Text format.  Once the sender was shown how to use HTML format instead, the receivers could see the correct attachment, not winmail.dat.

Yeah, it’s mainly sales quote emails from one of my tech gear sales reps I have this happen. When they send me the quotes, it attaches as a winmail.dat file.

It’s not just attachments.  The receiver can get a winmail.dat file if the text contains formatting which the receiving email client cannot interpret.  Again, the solution is to ensure that messages are sent in HTML format (or Plain Text).

I’ve used this site to open winmail.dat files in the past. Can’t vouch for it now as I’ve not used it for a while.
