My grand-daughter wants to try Open Office, I find there are two version: Open Office 2008 and Open Office 2.4.1. my understanding was that it was open source, but I find that you have to pay for Open Office 2008. What is the difference, if any?

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 7, 2008 at 7:58 pm #1124757The official site is http://www.OpenOffice.org, and offers the suite for free download. I think the license allows others to repackage and redistribute, so that could explain the variations.

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 7, 2008 at 10:20 pm #1124770Jefferson’s link does lead to the official 2.4.1 and they also make a beta available for version 3.0 on that web page. If you don’t mind telling, I’d like to see the link where you were asked to pay for it, just so I can check to see if it’s somebody legit. I’m Googling for “Open Office 2008” but getting many hits that obviously aren’t correct.

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 8, 2008 at 12:52 am #1124782Originally I Googled for “Open Office” with the quotes and it was the top item. Which I opened, the page that opened was http://openoffice.org-suite.com/index.asp?…u&se=google%5B/url%5D
I clicked Download now, completed the login information then clicked “Proceed to the next step” and details of the payment are there.
I will attach a screen shot.
I did not proceed I went to the lounge. The only difference is it seems to have a maths component.
Am I correct in this assumption? -

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 8, 2008 at 1:27 am #1124788Yeah, this is the reason I asked you where you got that “$$$” from. I think I’ve read about these guys in the Open Office forums, but I don’t remember the domain for sure. You notice that openoffice.org-suite.com is NOT the real web site for the Open Office product. That $$$ page that you talked about is some flaky membership fee for something or other. I don’t know what and don’t intend to find out. Also, as BATcher said, Googling for Open Office 2008, with or without quotes, brings a ton of hits for the MS Office product line, right or wrong. For your sake, I’m sure glad you took time to ask.

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 8, 2008 at 11:43 am #1124876Again saved by the lounge, my thanks to all.
Now to add a further complication I have just read that “OpenOffice 3 bumps from beta to RC” How long does it stay as release candiate?
That information came from http://www.download.com/8300-2007_4-12.html%5B/url%5D
If it is only a short period I will wait for my little (well 16) grand daughter.
The portable app sounds great, I purchased a 16G stick but have not been well enough to test the portable apps. -

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 8, 2008 at 1:14 pm #1124883I suggest you install the current stable version and stick with it for the next several months. As you know from installing or reading about new releases of other software, such as browsers or MS Office, the first three months of a new release are often rough. It’s just the law of probabilities: as the number of testers (I mean, users) goes from thousands to millions, all sorts of unnoticed problems surface.

OxygenOffice Professional contains more extras like templates, cliparts, samples, fonts and VBA support”you can get it here at http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/ooop%5B/url%5D

I use OpenOffice.org Portable on a USB stick and find it quite handy.
