Since the Search feature is off line…. I don’t know if this has been battered around before….

What is your take on Open Office. I just d/l’d the newest one. Seems to have some nice features. . .
I am running MS Office 98 and the price to upgrade to a newer MS Office to 2 computers. . . well, Open Office is free. .
So, has anyone been using OO and would care to share your thoughts?

    Thanks

If you are using some complex spreadsheets with some fairly medium strength VBA you will probably be disappointed in the ability of Open Office. Been a while since I tried it, and things I had done in Excel could simply not be duplicated in Open Office at the time. Who knows, it might have changed a bunch though. I figured it had about 3 more years of development before I would be comfortable with it’s abilities.

I didn’t like the way it handled styles from Word documents – they tended to get munged up pretty badly when opened in OO. There were some other minor quirks that I could have learned to live with, but this was a major pain in my butt since I spend a lot of time with long documents that make heavy use of styles. The back and forth was what got to me (back and forth between to major application suites). Outside of that…..it’s solid, free as you already noted, and will only get better with time.

I have an business PC which I have MS OffXP loaded on. I also have a home PC which I’ve loaded with OO, ver 1.0.? from memory.

Not being a power user, I haven’t had any problems and both my wife and daughter (she uses MS Off2000 at school) has been happy with it.

      Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone. I am not a power user by no means. . .But so far I’m happy with what I see. I am using the lastest ver. (in fact it is the beta ver.) AND, I keep remembering. . .its free

      Hi All

I’ve toyed a little with 602 PC Suite and found it to be a pretty good package for the price. free
Mind you I’m not a ‘power user’. Perhaps someone else can comment on 602.

      Have a Great day!!!

Since I flip between my Linux box, and my Windows boxes on a regular basis, I’ve been using OO.o for the majority of my personal work. It simply does what I want.

As for the work I do for work… that’s still in MS Office (on the company’s box).
