greetings one and all!
here’s a strange one for you. my husband uses outlook express(hereafter known as OE) for some of his e-mail, but not all (the rest he uses netscape for.) lately, OE has been doing strange things. sometimes it will open perfectly well, he reads his mail, and then it closes fine. other times, when the icon is clicked on, the blue box that says Outlook Express 6 opens, and hovers in the center of the screen, with the hourglass just spinning over it. if cursor is moved away, it becomes the arrow, but over the blue box, it stays the spinning hourglass, AND OE opens no further.
sometimes the blue box comes up, then we get this message:
msnmsgr.exe- Application Error
The instruction at “0x00485cf7” referenced memory at “0x00000000”. The memory could not be “read”.
Click on OK to terminate the program.
so we click on OK and OE closes, without having really opened.
the other thing that happens is this: when we try to close the non-opening blue box with the spinning hourglass, it won’t close. so, the only way out is to log off. when we try that, a box pops up that says End Program- O with Close Now and Cancel boxes to choose from. we generally choose Close Now, and then the shut down continues.
all this leads me to think that there is some sort of error within OE, but i don’t know what. i am wondering if a clean install would do the trick, but i don’t know how to uninstall and then reinstall just OE! is it possible to do this? if so, would it help, and could/would you please tell me how to do it? i’m at a loss here. 
it annoys my sweetheart immensely when he can’t get at his e-mail. he could do it going through netmail, but that’s a pain. 
oh, i almost forgot: our ISP is verizon DSL, and the beast (our computer) is a P4 2.53GHz, with 512MB memory, 80GB hard drive, audigy 2 sound board, and an nvidia MX440 video card. hope that helps.
