Having the same problem opening a Works document in Word 2000. I’ve tried the converters and they don’t work. Any other ideas? Carol

Yes, so I heard – esp if you tried to download the converters. The converter for Works is not installed with a typical installation but you can install them from your CD Rom. A long shot but I offer the following and have asked my clever computer guru for info as well. If he comes through with a better solution I will post back.
I finally unearthed from some old disk‘s (gotta be a better way to organize tips!) the following information, but be warned: it’s at LEAST 3 years old! – and was for another converter (but I’m assuming the same steps are ok for Works) and it’s for a stand-alone pc and I hope it hasn’t changed that much. thinks So FWIW:

        1. Exit Word.
        2. Click the Windows Start button, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.
        3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
        4. Click the Install/Uninstall tab.
        5. In the list of installed software, select either Microsoft Word or Microsoft Office.
        6. Click Add/Remove.
        7. In the Setup box, click Add/Remove button.
        8. If you are using Office Setup, select Converters Filters, and Data Access. Click Change Option.
        a. Select Converters. Click Change Option.
        b. Select the items you want to install.
        c. Click OK.
        d. Click Continue.
        e. When prompted by Setup, insert the appropriate disk or compact disc.
        The new component is installed.
        9. Select Converters and Filters. Click Change Option.
        a. Click Converters. Click Change Option.
        b. Select the items you want to install.
        c. Click OK.
        d. Click OK again.
        e. Click Continue.
        f. When prompted by Setup, insert the appropriate disk r compact disc.
        The new component is installed.

If you’re on Windows NT, that’s another process involving Program Manager but if you’re on WinNT you probably have an IT dept who can assist?

I have those converters and filters loaded and it still didn’t convert the Works file. Hummmm….Interesting why Microsoft products aren’t supported by other MS products. Other ideas….

It’s not a “mac” file is it??? I was going to relay the following info in my previous post but since I could not explain the why I did not.
However: I don’t know why it worked but: I recently received what was purported to be a mac file and the client could not open it. I tried various methods and then finally zipped, then unzipped (via explorer) &
lo and behold it opened in the appropriate program (in this case Excel). I have no idea why this worked but it did. I don’t know what version of mac/word/excel whatever, but … if all else fails, why not give it a shot?
It does seem odd that the converters would not work on this file for you. If I have time I’ll try to investigate further but in the meantime I hope that someone can provide you with more info/answers. Cheers! cheers
