My self-built computer has a pci 802.11n wireless card. It picks up the internet signal just fine in the living room, but only once in a while in my bedroom. When it does even pick up the wireless signal in my bedroom, it will get on the network, but not on the internet. When I put this card into a store-bought computer, it works just fine in all locations. I tried switching the power supplies (the one I had in the self-built was a cheap, $20 thing that came with the case), and now in the self-built the wireless card will find and join the network all the time. But I still have no internet. I have a “very good” connection at 270 mbps. I obviously need a new power supply for the self-built computer, but what’s up with the no internet? Am I missing some driver or something that would be on the store-bought computer’s hard drive that I still need to install on the self-built? Also, the card will only connect when my router is on the “b, g, and n” settings. If its on just “g” then it will just says obtaining ip address but it won’t do anything.

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody LoungerApril 1, 2010 at 5:05 am #1215866My experience with similar situations – connection to a router but not the internet – is the modem and router needed to be rebooted. Try unplugging the power from both your router and computer for about a minute then plug them both back in – modem first.
On another computer, the same situation occurred this week but this time it was another cause – a recent Microsoft update. The machine connected to the network but not the internet. A system restore to a point prior to the update remedied the problem.
Good luck

AskWoody LoungerApril 1, 2010 at 5:52 am #1215875I’ve had the same problem at home for a couple of months with a (wired) XP machine. It shares a printer and folders and they remain accessible from other computers, but after 20 minutes to sometimes 2 hours use this PC’s web browsers say no connection. tried FF and IE. A reboot fixes it for a while. Tech advice from work: “that can’t happen”…. Maybe the lounge has better advice?

Your reference sounds more like a malware-related loss of Internet connectivity, but I suppose any avenue is worth considering in this thread.

AskWoody_MVPApril 1, 2010 at 2:53 pm #1216400Getting on the Network is only the first step. You have to get the Network Password for your local network. I assume you did this successfully. But you must go into the card or the router and enter the ISP Log-in and ISP Password, usually a one-time operation. The Setup Page should have spaces to enter (or re-enter) this information. That may be the source of this sort of problem. It never hurts to renew this ISP information once in awhile.
