Has anyone found a way of getting Director 6 to run under Windows XP Pro SP2? I’ve searched the Macromedia Director forum archives, and haven’t yet found a solution. Director 6 used to run under Service Pack 1, but something within SP2 breaks the application, and it fails to initialize. I’d love to get back into using Lingo. It does run under Windows 2000, but I’d like to run it on this machine, as this is the computer that’s hooked to my 19″ monitor — and Director needs a LOT of screen real estate. A KVM switch is out of the question, as the Windows 2000 machine currently has one that lets me switch between two other computers. Running the executable in XP’s Compatibility Mode (all versions of Windows) fails. I should add that the program was installed with full Admin rights. Has anyone discovered a hack that will allow this older version to run under SP2? Unfortunately, upgrading the program to a current version is far too costly for me at this time. Any ideas?

This is a real shot in the dark, but may work
I am not sure what your skills are, so my apologies before I start. I had an old version of Macromedia FW4 on an old Win98 hard disc but lost the CD for it. I went over to win 2000 at work but still needed it for my then job. I made my win 98 HD a slave to my main root Win2000 HD and then created short cuts to the application…it seemed to work fine! This may work for you, but as I said it is a shot in the dark and would mean some outlay by you for a HD, I am lucky as I have a mass of old HD’s lying around.

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 4, 2005 at 7:59 pm #970842Thanks for the input, Jezza. My skills are not too shabby. LOL. I’ve been doing this for quite a while. Anyway, that’s a possibility, as I have several old hdd’s hanging around that could be FAT32, and could run 98SE, although I doubt it’s an NTFS/FAT32 issue. It’s possible, also, to slave one of these drives (with Win98SE as an inactive o/s), but I was trying to find a more direct approach. That would, of course, change drive letters, as I have logical partitions on the NTFS primary drive (along with two burners). But, thanks for the suggestion. I’ll reserve it as a means of last resort.

Thanks for the link, although I’d already seen it. The version of Director that I own is two or three versions older than the Director 8.51 Studio that Macromedia mentions, unfortunately. Since the new version is app. $1500, I need a hack to make my older version run in XP. I’d rather not have to dual boot Win98 on this machine just to be able to create Director movies, but it seems that may be my only option. Thanks again for looking for a solution.
Jon
