I ran Windows Update this morning to check for new updates. WELL, I got these OLD updates.

    KB3161958 Security Only Update 6-14-2016
    KB3181198 Win7 Update 10-10-2016
    KB982018 Win7 Update 7-11-2011

Just wondering WHY these have showed up 2 days AFTER doing the latest update installation? Are they safe to install, or should they be hidden and ignored?

Were these MAYBE removed by the latest update installation for some unknown reason?

When WU offers up old stuff it’s often after a third party something has been installed.  Something installed – an application – that installed an older version of a file that is now kicking detection for updates.

I have not tracked any issues with those updates.

I just install all the old one’s  when offered except for 664.  No problems.

        Susan,

Thanks for the info, BUT I have not installed anything new or old for nearly a month, and I don’t know of any apps that installed anything dither.

Old IE11 updates like KB3185319 is also showing up for Windows Update on my Win7 machines, Susan.
If I hide KB3185319, Windows Update will offer KB3175443 instead. And if I hide KB3175443, then WU will offer an even older IE11 update. I already have all the recent updates for Win7 installed, including KB4103718.

I did say elsewhere that the Windows Update metadata “supersedence” chain seems to be partly broken again for Win7.

KB3181198 does not exist, Pepsiboy. I think you meant KB3181988, which is needed after installing the KB3125574 convenience rollup update.

        EP,
You are correct, I meant KB3181988. I got clumsy fingers again. If you look at the attachment in that post, you will see the correct numbers of the offered updated.

Well, I hid those 3 old updates Thursday and have had no problems with this machine since. (Fingers, toes, and eyes are ALL crossed.) Hopefully none will show up.

Well, it has happened again. List of installed updates showed KB2999226 (XP update from Oct. 2015) was installed last night. I didn’t install anything myself, and this computer was NOT online over night. Who, or what installed it is a mystery to me. I uninstalled it, and SO FAR, no problems. Just wondering where it came from and how it got installed. All settings are to prevent auto install of ANYTHING.

        I misread this

Just wondering where it came from and how it got installed.

And thought I’d contribute some ideas. You haven’t shared maintenance details that may have been related. That’s fine too. Maybe someone else will commiserate with a similar story.

KB2999226 does not exist for XP, Pepsiboy. only for Vista SP2 & later.

Also KB2999226 is replaced by KB3118401 so remove/uninstall KB2999226 and install KB3118401 so that WU will no longer offer KB2999226.

From last summer and today, I see you give assurance that you have not installed any update or third-party item that would explain what you see. Have you possibly uninstalled a “rollup”?

I ask because if you were to install a February rollup, then decide to uninstall it, the process may remove parts and pieces of older individual patches. On the next scan, Windows Update will decide you need those patches again. This does not explain how it was done without your approval. You are set to “Never”, right?

Have you recently run a repair utility command as part of regular maintenance?

    • #330246

Asfor updates, I ONLY do a manual scan for updates, and NEVER automatically have them installed. I pick and choose and only install those that are necessary under Group B.

I was just being nosey to see if anyone else has had this happen in the last few days. Thanks for the reply.
