I have Outlook 2K installed on an XP pro machine. The PC is on a network. When anyone logs onto that PC and tries to open Outlook, Outlook opens briefly, then closes right away before you can do anything. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled Outlook several times with no luck. HELP!!!!

Does this happen with other Office applications? If so, check on the General Office Solutions board for links to knowledgebase articles on Office 2000 applications immediately closing.

This isn’t happening with the other Office Apps, but I’m sure that’s because they are from the Office 97 suite. Outlook is the only Office 2000 app.

I’ve seen this happen with Win2k and winxp for Outlook and Access and Access runtime, when these product are version 2000 or XP. It seems to relate to a design screw up where the user does not have rights to update parts of the registry during the installation process – even if policy is set to allow users to do installs. (Thanks again, MS.) It doesn’t happen with earlier versions of office because they don’t write to these areas during installation; they don’t use that version of windoze installer.

The solution has worked in every instance I’ve needed it. But it’s too complex (and somewhat risky) to enter here. Go to http://support.microsoft.com and do a search for article 257593. Or for more general information do a search on the phrase “closes immediately” with the product set to Outlook 2000.

If you still have this problem, you may find the solution via Office 2000 quits immediately on Win XP.
