As usual I am hoping for some desperately needed (by me, at least) information, but even though it isn’t directly connected with Microsoft products or anything really covered by WOPR.com, I am hoping for the best.
I work for Lucent Technologies in NJ and I’m responsible (it’s a loooong story) for SAP support, specifically SAP printing functionality. Our system relies on Dazel (HP product) server-side for processing network printer output, but SAP also allows local printing using a (I’ve been told relatively featureless) LPD. A number of users are getting failures from this LPD recently, with a message “Failed to connect to LPD” – we have tried any and all solutions we can think of, including software reinstallation, but nothing is resolving this issue. All I remember having read about line print daemons is that they use port 515 on a PC; my question (finally!) is – is there a way to determine if a PC has this port blocked, or if that port is in use by another process – possibly even another daemon that we aren’t aware of? My capabilities as far as telnetting within our own network are rather limited, since I’m not a network technician. Is there some obscure DOS command or switch I could use to do this?

I’m no expert (that a sure thing) but y can’t you set up firewall software (E.g. Norton Internet Security 2003) on one of the machines that is failing as a test machine and set the firewall software to monitor all use of the specified port. Don’t know if it would work but it’s worth a try.

By default, on a workstation, there aren’t any ports turned off. I don’t even think you can turn them off in 9x.
