I’m confused about (at least!) two things.

First, is how to determine for certain which release one is using. I went to Microsoft’s site, followed the instructions there, and found that our Word 2000 information matches none on the site. Here’s the site:
    http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/ar…s/Q255/2/75.ASP
There I learned that Word 2000, no service releases, would have this version number: 9.0.2720. The problem is that ours is numbered 9.0.2717.

Second, we are presently using Outlook 2000 (with Excel 97, Word 97, etc.). What are the compelling reasons (if any) for installing SR1 or SP2? Must they be installed in order? Or can one skip ahead to install SP2?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Since your version number is lower, that suggests you’re running a pre-release version of Word. Could that be the case? In any case, you aren’t using either of the Service Releases, which would change the version of each appliccation.

I’m confused. You say you have Word 2000 and then say you’re using Outlook 2000 with Excel and Word 97. Which version of Office does your question on service releases apply to? Both Office 97 and Office 2000 have SR1 and 2 releases. Both of them need the patches, although Office 2000 can get by without most of whats in SR2 for that release. Incidentally, if you have both versions on your machine, install Office 97 SR2 *before* you patch Office 2000. Once you apply the SR2 release to Office 2000, you can no longer patch Office 97.

As long as I understand, you have Office 97 installed with Outlook 2000 and Word 2000 with no service packs.

        Office 97 Updates:
Latest upgrade for Office 97 is SR2 patch. I presume it’s already installed. If not, download it from Microsoft
        http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/ar…s/Q151/2/61.ASP
The latest patch for Excel97 with SR2 is
        http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release…h&ordinal=7

        Office 2000 Updates:
To check for all available patches for Office 2000 applications (Word, Outlook, etc) go to
        http://office.microsoft.com/ProductUpdates/default.aspx

P.S. You can NOT install SP-2 patch for Office 2000 without SR-1 installed – you’ll get an error message if you try.

Thanks very much for your help. After I posted my query here, I called our premium support service. They concur with what you and Charlotte had to say, but you all were actually quicker, giving me an answer while I was still on the phone with them. Very impressive! Thanks.

Thanks for your quick response. My original post was confusing. My apologies. I also believe we have a pre-release version of Office 2000. The firm is using Office 97 for everything but Outlook, where we’re using 2000.

Thanks also for the warning about order of installation. We don’t have both versions of office running on any machine, so we should be OK there.

        Thanks again
