I had some vestiges of Office 2010 showing on my computer that came originally, I believe, from Microsoft Updates which I inadvertently allowed to be installed since I do not even have Office 2010. Since I obviously had no need for it, I thought I would remove the Office 2010 application showing in Revo Uninstaller (whatever pieces of Office 2010 there might have been, it was obviously not the complete program) using Advanced Mode. Up to this point my Office 2007 programs were all running perfectly. Now, however, whenever I open any Office 2007 program I am asked for the 15-digit product key. I have a Certificate of Authenticity and a 15-digit Product Key that came with the software but this product key is NOT accepted. I noticed that my Office Professional 2007 software was labeled as OEM Software so that might possibly be the problem. Also, in the latest round of Microsoft Updates (May 14, 2014) there was something installed called Microsoft Office File Validation Add-in which, by the sound of the title, might be involved in this scenario. In any case, if anyone has any idea of how to work around this situation, I would certainly appreciate hearing from you.

AskWoody MVPMay 17, 2014 at 7:21 am #1453350I would use the MS Office Fixit to remove the last vestiges of Office 2010 (which may have been originally installed as a trial version) first then use the MS Office Fixit to un-install Office 2007 and finally re-install Office 2007. I know it’s a pain but it sounds like Revo has removed a shared component.
BTW, the product key for MS Office 2007 (all versions) is 25 digits long (5 blocks of 5), not 15.

Click to enlargeThe Microsoft Office File Validation Add-in is used to validate that Binary File Format files (.docx, etc.) conform to the Microsoft Office File Format, i.e. checks for damaged/corrupt files or files that have malware attached. As such, the add-in has nothing to do with preventing acceptance of a product key.
(It being an OEM copy shouldn’t be an issue if it hasn’t been activated on another PC, except I understand support comes from the OEM provider, not MS.)
Hope this helps…

AskWoody MVPMay 17, 2014 at 9:11 am #1453360You could try a ‘repair’ first. Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features, select MS Office 2007 then click on the Change button. When the setup dialog appears, select the Repair option then the Continue button.

AskWoody LoungerMay 17, 2014 at 12:28 pm #1453372Thanks to all for the posts and all is well now. I did the uninstall with FixIt and had the same problem again with the Product Key as I attempted to reinstall. I had never had the occasion to use MS Answer Desk before but was pleasantly surprised to actually get a callback from a real live human being. I explained the situation and at first he indicated that he could not help me but I persisted and he made his “best offer” to sell me a product key for $100. I continued to resist saying that the problem appeared to be connected to the Office 2010 update and subsequent removal. He then consulted with a “senior” tech and did a remote connection to my computer (using LogMeIn Rescue, which was interesting since I use LogMeIn Pro all the time to connect to my NC computer from here in Maine). He was able to see the 2010 update and the removal of same and, here’s the almost unbelievable part, admitted that what occurred to me was indeed Microsoft’s fault! I now have a new valid Product Key, Office 2007 is again installed on my computer and, after 38 Windows Updates, all is working again as it should be. Again, thanks to all for the posts!
