Office Pro 2021 getting updates for 2016

I have the PC version of Office Pro for 2021, but so far the only updates I’ve gotten this year show for Office 2016.  Is that right?

Did you upgrade from Office 2016 by any chance?

I’ve seen where leftovers from prior installs aren’t fully removed and the security updates for older Office versions will still be offered up/installed.

All recent version of the so-called “perpetual” version of MS Office are based on MS Office 2016 Click-to-Run. The Wikipedia article Microsoft Office 2021 notes that “Office 2021 remains same major version 16 as previous versions of Office; it introduces new dynamic arrays, XLOOKUP[4] features for Excel, full dark mode support and performance improvements.”

If you view the MS Office 2021 release information at Update History for Office LTSC 2021 and Office 2021 the section titled “Retails Versions of Office 2021” shows you should have Version 2210 Build 15726.20202 released on 08-Nov-2022 (assuming you are fully patched). When you go to File | Office Account and look at what’s listed under the About Outlook (or About Word, or what ever Office program you have opened) that is the Office build number you should see.  However, if  you click the About Outlook button your Build number will be listed differently and look something like Version 2210 Build 16.0.15726.xxxx.

My Office 2019 Home and Business is similar. If I open MS Outlook 2019 and go to File | Office Account and look under About Outlook I see I’m still on Version 2210 Build 15726.20174 Click-to-Run. According to the release notes at Update History for Office 2016 C2R and Office 2019 I’ve received the 27-Oct-2022 update and am still waiting for the latest Version 2210 Build 15726.20202 (released 08-Nov-2022) to be delivered.

However, if I click the About Outlook button the Build number is different and shows I’m currently at Version 2210 Build 16.0.15726.20070.

Susan….no, fresh copy of 2021 on a brand new machine, obviously no older versions ever installed.

b…..I’ve been looking in the Windows Update listing to see which patches have been installed.

Imacri…..you’re spot on, thank you!   I hadn’t seen the Wikipedia article, thus the confusion. Now it make sense, well, no, now I understand why.

Even more odd, all the patches say 32bit yet this 2021 is 64 bit.

If you see actual patches in your Windows update history that are office updates, you have some Office msi (old fashioned) code somewhere on your system.

Click to run won’t show up in your Windows update history.

Thanks, Susan.  As mentioned, the only Office thing I installed is this 2021 copy installed on a brand new machine.  Attached is a list of all of the Microsoft software showing up now.  I was not able to do a custom install, thus the Access package.  I wouldn’t think the Visual C++ stuff would be involved.

This is one of those $40 deals for stand-alone Office, could that have some bearing?

’16 C2R … I clk’d the arrow on Update Options / Update Now and got the .20202 from .20174. Often at Non-Security Updates I’ll do the same and 50-50 it updates then.

There was no need for me to run a manual check for updates. I checked this afternoon at File | Office Account and noticed my MS Office Home and Business 2019 Click-to-Run had already updated itself to the current Version 2210 Build 15726.20202 (rel. 08-Nov-2022) without any intervention on my part, as it should.

I can also confirm that these silent background updates for my Click-to-Run edition of MS Office 2019 are not listed at Settings | Update Security | Windows Update | View Update History.
