AskWoody PlusNovember 8, 2017 at 12:02 pm #144740Gotta love Woody’s comment in CW regarding KB 2952664:
I’ll note in passing that last year, the Windows 7 patch was dated Oct. 4, 2016, at revision 25. Now it’s listed as Oct. 31, 2017, at revision 13. Sequential numbering must be a hard computer science problem.

ManagerNovember 8, 2017 at 7:08 pm #144787KB2952664 is a telemetry patch we do not recommend installing.
And we are on MS-DEFCON2, which means to hold off on installing any patches. However, please look in your Update History and see if by any chance you installed KB4041686 (2017-10 Preview of Monthly Quality Rollup for Win7). It was an UNCHECKED optional update (also not recommended to install) that may produce the problems you are seeing. See this post If it is installed, uninstalling may solve the problem, or it may not.

AskWoody LoungerNovember 9, 2017 at 4:58 am #144819Well, I got the KB2952664 Update yesterday, also. It was ‘Optional’ and unchecked. I hid it AGAIN. Also had an ‘Optional’ unchecked update for “Office 2013”. Hid it also as I do not have “Office” on this machine. Just wondering WHY I get that update when there is nothing on this machine that has anything to do with “Office”?

MemberNovember 10, 2017 at 1:40 pm #144993I have Windows 7, Professional, x64 with Windows Update set to “Notify, but let me install”, and today received notification that two updates are available to install:
KB2952664 Optional, for Win 7 x64
KB4011188 Important, for Office 2010
Given that, it looks like KB2952664 is for Windows, not for Office.
Also: what would be best to do about KB4011188 , and has anyone heard of it as well?
Thanks.

ManagerNovember 10, 2017 at 1:53 pm #144997KB2952664 is the Telemetry/compatibility patch that Microsoft keeps pushing out through Windows Update. I don’t recommend installing it.
KB4011188 is non-security update for Office 2010. It is an UNCHECKED optional update. You can read about it here. Since we are on DEFCON-2, it is a good idea to hold off installing it until we know if it is causing any problems. Wait until the DEFCON 3-5, and there will be information about it. MemberNovember 10, 2017 at 5:59 pm #145039Thanks, PKCano.
As described at the MS page for KB4011188, this update is for Windows Defender, a program I do not use and is, in fact, turned off in my machine, as a quick look at it in the Control Panel of my PC has revealed. I have had the antivirus Webroot Security Anywhere installed and running, with no malware problems, for several years — at least that I have noticed.
So I will “hide” the suggested update, as it seems likely to be of no use to me.
