• Office names Confusion (Office 2003)

    The different names used for MS Office are driving me crazy. On the WOPR site Office seems to jump from Office 2000 to Office XP. What happened to Office 2003 which is the version I am using. Now I understand that an Office 2007 is going to be released. What happened to 2004, 2005, and 2006? Is there anyone that can enlighten me about these version names?
    Thanks, David40

      Welcome to Woody’s Lounge!

      Microsoft doesn’t release a new version of Office every year. The versions released for Windows during the last 10 years are:

      Office 97
      Office 2000
      Office XP = Office 2002
      Office 2003

      Versions for the Apple Macintosh are

      Office 98
      Office 2001
      Office X
      Office 2004

      There has never been a 2005 or 2006 version, either for Windows or Macintosh.

      The next version will be Office 2007, to be released at the end of this year or, more probably, during the first half of next year (2007).

        Thank you very much for clearing that up.

        Also: for technical purposes, versions are named:

        Office97 = OFFICE8
        Office 2000 = OFFICE9
        Office XP (2002) = OFFICE10
        Office 2003 = OFFICE11
        and Office 2007 = OFFICE12

        (You can find these names in Program Files folder and Windows registry.)

        For more confusion, the latest Service Packs:
        for Office97 – SP-2b;
        for Office 2000 – SR-1 plus SP-3;
        for Office XP (2002) – SP-3;
        for Office 2003 – SP-2.

        Welcome to the Lounge!
