I’m hoping someone(s) can help me with this head-banging question…

I just turned on O365 2FA/MFA for 1 mailbox (my own) within my tenant.  I’m using the MS Authenticator app on my iPhone X (iOS 12.4).  I went through adding my email address to the authenicator app, scanning the QR code, etc. and it all works. (There is an exception but I’ll mention that later).  Email is flowing correctly through my iPhone and iPad.  However, email using Outlook 365 on my laptop (Windows 10 Pro 1903) is not working.  Here’s what I get:

Outlook is asking my for my O365 password.  However it will not accept it – keeps saying it’s wrong.  See the 1st attachment. I’ve tried removing the local domain part, using my user name, no joy.

I logged out of all MS Accounts and Office apps.  No change.

I uninstalled O365 and reinstalled.  No change.

I created a new Outlook profile, and launched Outlook.  It attempted to search for my “email settings” and then failed saying it could not find them.  See attachment 2 and 3.

I then tried to manually add/setup my email account and got the same “wrong password” popup.  Other than wiping my laptop and starting completely over, I’m stumped.

A few other items (to stir and obscure the pot)…
    1.  My email address, which is a O365 work account is the same address as my microsoft account.  I also think there’s a personal O365 account lying around somewhere with the same email address.

    2. I also have my work email address setup in Outlook using 2FA/MFA – it’s a different tenant and works perfectly (I wasn’t the one who set up 2FA on this work tenant)

So….help??  I’m really stumped at this point on how to get Outlook connected and working on my laptop to my O365 account (which is a “work” not a “home” account).

    — Just as an additional question, does anyone know how to “register” my iphone to 2 different O365 tenants?

Thanks in advance for any help!!

    Jim

      One thing I should add:

When I log into Outlook OWA from the 365 portal, I get a valid notification from 2FA/MFA on the MS Authenticator app on my iPhone.  I “accept” the security notification and Outlook OWA via the 365 portal successfully launches.

So, it’s simply (!) the fact that I cannot get Outlook 365 on my laptop to connect to my email account.

      (ugh)

I think you need to grab an “app password” from the security options of your account page:

      Using Two-factor authentication in Outlook

Using app passwords with apps that don’t support two-step verification

Create an app password for Office 365

(That’s what I had to do, but it was a long time ago.)

I’m thinking along the same lines, but I have not been able to create an app password.  See the two pictures attached.   I’m thinking I might have enabled 2FA incorrectly but it *IS* working and asking for 2FA via the Authenticator app when I use 365 online OWA and when I set it up on my iPhone and iPad.  And as I mentioned, I cannot create a new Outlook profile.

If you access https://account.microsoft.com/security/ then Two-Step verification, Manage >, do you not get an App Passwords section halfway down the page (section 4 of 8)?

That’s where it is for me. But I don’t recognize your second screenshot; what app setting is that? I now see that’s your Office 365 Portal, Account section (which I don’t have).

P.S. I don’t see how you can have both a work account and a personal account with the same email address. Perhaps that’s part of the puzzle?

The screen you are getting is not the “modern” auth window.  What version of Outlook do you have installed?

#Susan:  I’m running Outlook 365 and when I go into my Admin portal (I’m the tenant admin) to Settings>Services & Addons>Modern Auth it looks like I don’t have Modern Auth turned on.  If I turn it on will it force 2FA for all users?  I need to make sure I’ve got it working for me before I subject my users (my family!) to this same 2FA setup process.  🙂

#b:  Yeah, the multiple accounts are very confusing.  Let me try re-wording it:
      1.  I have my business email:  jim at businessname.com
      2.  I have my private email address:  jim at personalemail.com
      3.  For whatever reason (probably my screwup long ago in the past) I have a “Microsoft Work or School Account” as my private jim at personalemail.com  **AND** I have a “Microsoft Personal Account” with the same private  jim at personalemail.com
      4. I figured all this out the hard way a long time ago and have adapted to it by making sure I **NEVER** login to a Microsoft Account with the “personal” Microsoft account; I **ALWAYS** make sure I’m selecting “work or school”.

Yeah, it’s pretty ugly.  I wish there was a way to delete the “Microsoft PERSONAL Account” and stick with the Work/School one.  (another sigh)

Here’s some additional and conflicting info:

When I go to O365 Admin Center>Setup and look at “Multi-Factor” you’ll see the check mark indicating I have 2FA “done”.  See the 1st pic attached.  Then click on “view” and you’ll see another check mark saying “completed”.  See the 2nd attachment.  BUT…if you go to Active Users>me > “Manage multifactor authentication” you’ll see 2FA for me set to “disabled”.  See the 3rd attachment.

      Yeah, I’m confused…..

What happens if you click that “Enable” link (in your third picture) while the check box next to your name is checked?

#jabeattyauditor:  To tell you the truth, I haven’t tried it!
      1.  I’m just a tish scared….ok, maybe more than a tish.  That’s because 2FA **IS** working when I log into portal.office.com on my PC, and 2FA **IS** working for email on my iPhone and iPad.  I’m concerned about what will happen and will I lose all email access.  🙂

Part of what I’m hoping to get from this forum is that I’m not going to make things worse by clicking…

Do you have any words to create that warm, fuzzy feeling I’m looking for?  lol 🙂

      Bump…

@Susan:  Do you recommend I turn on Modern Auth even though I have already enabled 2FA?  Will doing so immediately turn on 2FA for all the other users in the tenant?

      Thanks,

      Jim
